  • Wrestling: ’Toppers...

    Following a disappointing effort earlier last week, the Los Alamos Hilltopper wrestling team bounced back well at Saturday’s Moriarty Duals.

    Los Alamos finished third in its five-team pool at the contest, hosted by Moriarty’s Pintos, before falling to the West Mesa Mustangs in the fifth-place contest.

    In Pool B, Los Alamos finished behind Las Vegas Robertson and Valley but topped Del Norte and Eldorado for the third-place finish.

  • Skiing: Pajarito officials are...

    If this weekend is any indication of what’s to come, the staff at Pajarito Mountain is in for a busy ski season.

    Pajarito, Los Alamos’ local ski area, was packed to near-capacity on several days during the holiday season.

    Pajarito opened for the season Dec. 20, just in time for Los Alamos National Laboratory’s and Los Alamos Public Schools’ winter break. During the peak weekend sessions, lift tickets were being sold in the neighborhood of 1,000 a day.

  • Baseball: Isotopes unveil 2009...

    The Albuquerque Isotopes, Triple-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers, have announced their 2009 schedule, featuring  a 72-game home slate that includes 11 weekends and eight fireworks shows at Isotopes Park.  

    For the first time since 2007, the ’Topes will kick off the Pacific Coast League season at home with the first of four games against the Omaha Royals, Triple-A affiliate of the Kansas City Royals, taking place April 9.

  • Wrestling: LA drops a pair of...

    ALBUQUERQUE — Those who helped themselves over the break had it show Tuesday night at Del Norte. Those who didn’t, well, that showed, too.

    It came as little surprise to Los Alamos Hilltopper head coach Eric Sorenson that his wrestlers who stuck around and worked out during the winter break at the Hilltoppers’ wrestling room did well in Tuesday’s triangular meet. Those who were out of town didn’t fare as well.

  • Boys basketball: 'Toppers...

    While having more turnovers doesn’t usually equate to scoring more points, the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys basketball team had that exact thing happen to them late in Tuesday’s ballgame.

    With the visiting Volcano Vista Hawks trailing in the second half of Tuesday’s game, the Hawks switched defensive tactics, applying full-court pressure to the Hilltoppers.

    Thoma’s soccer team wins at showcase

    Soccer player Andy Thoma’s club team, Elite FC Gladiator, took first place at the Disney College Showcase last week.

    The U16 team based in Albuquerque picked up a third-place ranking in the nation and a first-place ranking in Region IV with its win at the showcase tournament.

    Thoma is a sophomore at Los Alamos High School and was a second team All-District selection in the 2008 season.

  • Boys basketball: LA drops two at...

    Several miscues in the Poe Corn Invitational third-place game Saturday proved to be costly for the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys basketball team.

    Los Alamos turned the ball over 20 times, many of which were converted into points on the other end, and missed 7 of 11 free throws as it fell to District 2AAAA rival Capital 69-65 in overtime Saturday.

    The loss came just a day after the Hilltoppers dropped a semifinal contest to the Goddard Rockets after seemingly having the game under control at the break.

  • Girls basketball: Toppers...

    It may have been the first half the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls basketball team has been looking for the entire 2008-09 season.

    Just three days after one of its worst offensive opening halves of the season, the Hilltoppers punished the visiting Santa Fe Demons, scoring 41 points in the first half Saturday night at Griffith Gymnasium. Los Alamos cruised in the second half, holding Santa Fe to just five points in the final quarter to win 64-39.

    Los Alamos’ 41 first half points equaled or bettered its total in seven full games on the season.

  • Swimming and diving: LA earns a...

    With little in the way of competition Saturday, the main focus of the Los Alamos Quad for the Hilltopper swim teams was simply to get the best times.

    Despite the lack of competitive push in most events — Los Alamos girls won all but two events Saturday and the boys won 10 events — the Hilltoppers were up to the challenge.

    The Hilltopper boys won the Los Alamos Quad with a team score of 380, holding off Socorro, which finished with 272, while the Hilltopper girls took 517 points to win going away.

  • Girls basketball: LA drops...

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper girls basketball team dropped its first round contest at the Goddard Holiday Classic Monday afternoon.

    The Hilltoppers took on Class AAA Tohatchi in the opening round of the tournament, being played in Roswell. Tohatchi (3-3) outran Los Alamos in the first half and held on in the second half to take a 53-45 victory.

    No other information on Monday’s game was available as of press time Tuesday.
