  • Girls basketball: Late LA rally...

The Los Alamos Hilltopper girls basketball team was nipped Saturday afternoon by the Aztec Tigers in the Four Corners area.

Los Alamos came back from a 28-15 deficit at the break, holding the Tigers (4-2) to just 5 points in the third quarter, but fell short in its rally, losing 41-40.

While the Hilltoppers outscored the Tigers 25-13 in the second half, they couldn’t overcome a slow first half.

Los Alamos head coach Tarah Logan said the team got into some early foul trouble in the first half which slowed it down considerably.

Zak Wilde of Los Alamos made his second straight final round Saturday, but this time came out on top.

JACONA — In the final two rounds of the Ben Lujan Invitational, Los Alamos had to fend off a pair of scrappy squads.

In the end, however, the Hilltopper boys basketball team kept the Elks and Warriors at bay to win the ninth annual tournament Saturday night.

Just one night after scraping its way out of a double-digit hole to knock off the host Pojoaque Elks, Los Alamos had to stave off numerous comeback attempts by Socorro.

In the first of their two meetings this season between a pair of rivals, the Los Alamos Hilltopper hockey team overwhelmed the Taos Tigers 18-2 and retained the North Star  trophy Friday night.

Amazingly, 10 different players scored goals during Friday night’s game at Los Alamos County Ice Rink, including four goals by Dylan Schreiber, three by Ben Havemann and two each by Nick White, Zach Mang and Dylan Harwell.

  • LA buries Cimarron to advance

JACONA — If only they were all this easy.

While it would’ve been tough for Class A Cimarron to pull off an upset over the third-ranked Class AAAA team in the state, Los Alamos, during their game Thursday, falling behind 21-2 after the first quarter wasn’t going to make the quest any easier.

The Hilltoppers held Cimarron’s Rams without a field goal for more than 11 minutes to start the contest while doing virtually anything and everything they wanted on the other end of the floor to win by a final of 73-31.

Several local multi-sport athletes have been keeping busy during the 2008 season.

A trio of Los Alamos ironman competitors took part in Ford Ironman Arizona at the end of November. Although none of them qualified for the World Ironman Championships, which will be held in October 2009, this won’t be the last chance for those wanting to punch their tickets to Hawaii.

Martin Pieck of Los Alamos was the top finisher at Ironman Arizona, which was held in Tempe.
