  • Swimming and diving: LA girls...

    A seasoned veteran and a newcomer led the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls swimming team to a win at the Farmington Invitational this weekend.

    Sammi Kao, a junior, won a pair of events for the Hilltopper girls Saturday, winning both the 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly. Meanwhile, eighth-grader Jennifer Barich-Mooday, who had a big day a week earlier at the Albuquerque Academy Invitational, finished second behind Kao in the 200 freestyle, then went on to win the 500 freestyle, making state championship meet qualifying times in both events along the way.

  • Hockey: LA wins in its home...

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper hockey team remained unbeaten and solidified its hold on first place with a 4-1 win over the Santa Fe Blue Jackets Friday.

    The Blue Jackets (8-1-1), a composite New Mexico Interscholastic Ice Hockey League team representing St. Michael’s, Capital and Santa Fe High Schools went into Friday night’s game at Los Alamos County Ice Rink as the only team in the state that hadn’t yet fallen to the Hilltoppers. The two teams played to a 3-3 tie Nov. 23 at Santa Fe.

  • Wrestling: ’Toppers...

    Blaine Lattin again led a big outing for the Los Alamos Hilltopper wrestling team this weekend.

    Lattin took the gold medal in the 189-pound bracket for the Hilltoppers at a singles tournament, hosted by Albuquerque’s Valley High School. Los Alamos was originally slated to compete at Highland but was rerouted to Valley late last week by Albuquerque Public Schools officials.

    In all, Los Alamos took home six medals, four in the junior varsity bracket and two more in the varsity tournament. For the tournament, the Hilltopper squad went a combined 16-6.

  • Girls basketball: ’...

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper girls basketball team dropped a nondistrict contest Friday night to the Albuquerque Academy Chargers.

    Just three days after one of its better offensive performances of the season, a 50-33 win over the Taos Tigers, Los Alamos had its second lowest-scoring outing against the Chargers.

    A good Hilltopper defensive showing against a solid Chargers’ squad was squandered in Friday night’s 33-29 loss at Academy.

    Hockey team at home tonight

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper ice hockey team will play its final home game of the season tonight at Los Alamos County Ice Rink.

    The game, against Santa Fe’s Blue Jackets, is scheduled for 7 p.m. Admission is free.

    At Friday night’s game, the Hilltoppers will honor their seniors.

    Los Alamos also will be in action Saturday when it plays Eldorado.

    Saturday’s game is scheduled for 1 p.m. in Albuquerque.

  • Boys basketball: LA crushes Taos...

    Against a small but quick opponent, winning the battle in the backcourt was of utmost importance for the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys basketball team.

    Mission accomplished.

    The Hilltopper guards didn’t beat the Taos Tiger guards Wednesday night; they destroyed them. That, along with complete dominance in the paint equaled a 70-39 rout of the Tigers Wednesday night at Griffith Gymnasium.

    TAOS — A lot of things went right and not too many went wrong for the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls basketball team in its District 2AAAA opener Tuesday.

    Los Alamos broke open its district debut contest by outscoring the Taos Tigers 16-5 in the third quarter and rolled to a 50-33 victory at Taos. More importantly, the Hilltoppers got their 2AAAA season kick-started with Tuesday’s win.

    It was a lopsided victory for Los Alamos and one of its best total team performances of the season.

  • Boys basketball: LA opens...

    In Alan Kirk’s four-tiered boys basketball season system, tier one is finishing up and tier two is just about to start.

    Los Alamos ended its first phase with a solid 12-6 record. However, the most heated phase of the season gets going Wednesday when the District 2AAAA season opens.

    The Hilltoppers will host the Taos Tigers, the only one of the five district teams without at least 10 wins so far.
