TAOS — It wasn’t over until it was over. And then some.

Kirk Webber and Johnathan Jones slugged it out until the bitter end to decide the outcome of Saturday’s match between the Los Alamos Hilltoppers and the Taos Tigers boys tennis teams.

The two No. 4 singles split their two sets then went into a tiebreaker. But the tiebreaker would decide more than just the outcome of their match.

The Los Alamos Hilltopper girls track and field team did a little bit of shuffling with its personnel at Saturday’s Rio Rancho Chile Quad.

And everything still turned out just fine.

Los Alamos finished Saturday’s meet, hosted by the Class AAAAA Rams, in second place in the team standings. Los Alamos grabbed 173 points, just four points behind Rio Rancho, while Moriarty finished well behind the pace.

Los Alamos High School announced Friday afternoon that the Hilltopper-Moriarty Pinto baseball game had been canceled. That game was scheduled for Saturday.

However, LAHS athletic director Vicki Nelms said the Española Valley Quadrangular, scheduled to be played at Quail Ridge Inn in Taos, was still on for Saturday.

Los Alamos will play Española Valley at approximately noon and Taos after the conclusion of that match.Friday's scheduled boys and girls tennis match with Farmington was canceled, as was the Los Alamos Junior Varsity Softball Tournament.

The Los Alamos Middle School wrestling team wrapped up their season with a celebration to honor the effort put out by the team last month.

Coaches Ben Salas and David Rendell said the 2008-09 season best one to date.

“We were in five tournaments and placed first in four and second in one,” Salas said. “We’ve consistently been the top two or three school in northern New Mexico, usually behind Las Vegas Robertson and sometimes St. Mikes in Santa Fe, but not this year, we were on top of the pile the whole year.”
