Spectators and at least one marshal at the Zurich Classic were startled when an alligator, estimated to be about 12 feet, spent some of the afternoon sunning itself on the left side of the 12th fairway.

  • Teams go big in 1st round of NFL...

NEW YORK (AP) — Short on glam, slim on glitter and no sign of Manti Te’o, the NFL draft was still a solid B-plus.
As in Big, as in Brawn, as in Bulk, as in Beefy.
We’re talking a scale-busting 600 pounds at the outset Thursday night with offensive tackles Eric Fisher of Central Michigan and Luke Joeckel of Texas A&M.
The first seven picks were all linemen: four on offense, three on defense.
“That’s a lot of love for the big boys up front, which we usually don’t get,” Fisher said.
None of the teams making the first 32 selections went for Te’o, not even Minnesota, which had three first-round picks. The All-America linebacker’s poor performance in Notre Dame’s loss to Alabama in the national championship game surely was a factor. Still to be determined is how much the fake girlfriend hoax cost him.
Unlike the last few years when bumper crops of quarterbacks reigned, this was pure muscle, and lots of it.
Actually, not a single QB was selected until Florida State’s EJ Manuel went to Buffalo at No. 16 — the lowest since 2000, when Chad Pennington went 18th to the Jets.
No running backs were chosen, either, for the first time since 1963.

  • Pittman is best predictor at the...

Emily Pittman was the top predictor at this week’s Atomic City Roadrunners’ Pace Race with a near perfect prediction.
The Pace Race, a weekly event hosted by the Atomic City Roadrunners, was Tuesday.
The 1- and 3-mile races started at Brewer Arena rodeo grounds on North Mesa.
Pittman finished the race with a 1-second prediction error. Pittman needed a good prediction to top Bob Weeks, who was just 3 seconds off his finish time.
Christie Kelly, who was just 9 seconds off her predicted time, was the fastest runner on the 1-mile course (10:27), followed by Weeks (13:29).
The fastest runner on the 3-mile course was again Ted Romero (20:28). Nikol Strother was the fastest female runner (21:28).
The next Pace Race will be Tuesday starting at the Los Alamos County Ice Rink. Race time is 6 p.m.
More information can be found about the race or the Atomic City Roadrunners by visiting the club’s website, atomicrunners.com, or calling 672-1639.

  • Draft lacks flair but has plenty...

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — This year's NFL draft is heavy on size and light on glamour.

There's no high-profile quarterback destined to go No. 1 and instantly become the face of a downtrodden franchise. There's not even a running back or wide receiver worthy of the top overall pick, someone with the kind of swagger that wins over fans weary of losing.

Nope, there's just beef. And lots of it.

There's 6-foot-6, 306-pound Luke Joeckel, the offensive tackle from Texas A&M whom the Kansas City Chiefs are expected to select first overall. There's also Eric Fisher of Central Michigan and Lane Johnson of Oklahoma, two more 300-pounders who could be snapped up in the first 10 picks.

Even the defensive side of the ball is big on bigness: Florida's Sharrif Floyd, Utah's Star Lotulelei and Sylvester Williams of North Carolina are considered premium space eaters.

Utilitarian? Sure. Flashy? Not so much.

"There are a lot of good football players there," Broncos President John Elway insisted. "It's kind of a matter of what kind of flavor you like, but there are plenty of defensive linemen — not only defensive ends but defensive linemen — in this draft, and it's deeper than most."

Baseball team is No. 10 in MaxPrep ratings

The Los Alamos Hilltopper baseball team is ranked No. 10 in Class 4A, according to the most recent MaxPreps.com ratings.
The website’s rankings, which have been sporadic at best this season, were released Sunday.
Heading into Wednesday’s game against Santa Fe, Los Alamos was the only District 2-4A team to crack the top 10. Española Valley (15-5 overall, 5-2 in 2-4A) was in the No. 14 spot and Bernalillo, Santa Fe and Capital were the Nos. 23, 24 and 26 teams in the 26-school class.
Piedra Vista (12-8) was the No. 1 team in 4A this week, ahead of Goddard (13-3) and Farmington (15-7). Los Alamos and Española Valley were the two lowest-ranked teams in the state with above-.500 records.

  • LA earns season sweep over Santa...

Both Micaela Christensen and Kristin Christensen went long Wednesday as the Los Alamos Hilltopper softball team downed the Santa Fe Demons.
Micaela Christensen hit a 3-run home run in the bottom of the first and Los Alamos broke the game open with a 4-run fifth inning. Los Alamos cruised to a 9-5 victory, sweeping Santa Fe for the 2013 season.
Santa Fe, which has put up some good offensive totals this season, had just one big inning, the top of the sixth, against Hilltopper starting pitcher Jordan Hammock. Santa Fe had a pair of doubles off Hammock as it tried to stay in the ballgame, but Hammock, who threw 101 pitches in the contest, was able to finish out the inning and pick up the victory.
“Santa Fe always has good batters,” Los Alamos manager Roger Anaya said. “I wasn’t surprised to see them put the ball in play the way they did.”
Offensively, Micaela Christensen was 3-for-4 and drove in 5 runs, while Erin Kirk went 2-for-4 with a run scored and a run batted in. Kristin Christensen scored twice and batted in a pair of runs for the Hilltoppers (11-11 overall, 7-2 in 2-4A).
Los Alamos travels to Española Valley for a District 2-4A doubleheader Saturday.

  • 'Topper offense comes up...

Since the start of the District 2-4A season, the Los Alamos Hilltopper baseball team has sported one of the most productive offenses in the state.
Los Alamos put up some more solid offensive production Wednesday, taking a win in a big district contest and moving a step closer to earning its fifth straight district title.
Los Alamos scored multiple runs in five of its six innings at bat, dropping the Santa Fe Demons at Bomber Field early, 14-4.
The win puts the Hilltoppers at 8-1 in the district season, but they still have a key doubleheader Saturday at Española Valley.
But with Wednesday’s victory, Los Alamos will have to win just one or other contest to secure the district title.
The top of the Hilltopper batting order came through in a big way against Santa Fe. Lead-off batter Connor Mang reached base in three of his four plate appearances and scored a pair of runs. Behind him, No. 3 batter Jared Mang, Connor’s older brother, and clean-up batter Steven Williams combined to drive in 7 runs.
Connor Mang, a freshman fresh off hitting for the cycle in the second game of a doubleheader against Bernalillo Saturday, said one of the keys for Los Alamos during this district season has been jumping on opposing pitching early.

  • Cowboys Stadium gets 1st college...

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) — The first championship game in the College Football Playoff will be held at Cowboys Stadium.

The BCS conference commissioners announced Wednesday that Arlington, Texas, edged Tampa, Fla., in the bidding to be the site of the first title game in the new playoff system.

"The stadium itself was the biggest determiner," BCS executive director Bill Hancock said about the $1.2 billion dollar, state-of-the-art home of the NFL's Cowboys and the Cotton Bowl. "It's still the stadium with a capital 'T.'"

The game will be held Jan. 12, 2015.

The final three sites for the semifinal rotation also were announced and Cowboys Stadium came up a winner again. The Cotton Bowl will be part of the six-bowl rotation, along with the Chick-fil-A Bowl in Atlanta and the Fiesta Bowl in Glendale, Ariz. The Holiday Bowl in San Diego also bid for a spot in the semifinal rotation, but couldn't pull the upset.

The Rose, Orange and Sugar bowls are already part of the semifinal rotation. The Rose and Sugar will host the first semifinals Jan. 1, 2015,

The next season, the Cotton and Orange bowls will host the semifinals on New Year's Eve. The semis will be played in the Fiesta and Chick-fil-A bowls after the 2016 season.
