At the District 2-5A meet Saturday at Capital, four Los Alamos wrestlers won titles while a total of 10 ’Toppers qualified for this weekend’s state championships
As a team, Los Alamos finished second behind Capital.
Lane Saunders, Chris Romero, Sam Harvey and Patrick Irish reached the top of the podium for Los Alamos.
Donovan Atencio, Damien Sundby, Trevor Brown and Milo Light also placed in the top-three at the district championship to qualify for state while Israel Gellis and Dylan Irish both received wild card bids into the state championship tournament.
Saunders used a first-period pin against Bernalillo’s Samuel Yazzie to reach the 182-pound finals. Saunders then racked up the points to beat Capital’s DJ Williams by a technical fall, 16-0, and win the championships.
Saunders, who is a two-time state champ, will enter the state tournament with a 38-1 record. His lone loss was to Belen’s Nathaniel Martinez (42-2).
“He should see him again in the state final,” Los Alamos head coach James Hatt said. “That should be a good final.”
In the 170 pound district final, Romero pinned Capital’s Abel Barraza in 3 minutes, 10 seconds to win the championship. Romero will take a 25-9 record into state.
