    Tuesday’s game at Iowa rained out The Albuquerque Isotopes’ game Tuesday against the Iowa Cubs was postponed by rain. Instead, the two teams tried to squeeze two games in today. Results of the first game, which started at 11:05 a.m., weren’t available as of press time. Albuquerque, the Triple-A franchise of the Los Angeles Dodgers, was scheduled to start its four-game series at Iowa Tuesday. That series started following Albuquerque’s successful trip to Oklahoma City, where it took 2-of-3 contests in that series. Albuquerque lost opening game against Oklahoma City Friday, but won Saturday’s and Monday’s games with pitchers Roman Colon and Jon Link earning the victories.

    Aggies softball blanks Lobos The New Mexico State University softball team shut out New Mexico 6-0 to extend its win streak to six consecutive games at Lobo Field Tuesday. NMSU (33-12) opened with a pair of runs early in the second inning and then added four more in the top of the sixth to clinch its third straight win over UNM in Albuquerque. Junior Tiare Jennings ripped a home run for the fifth straight game as the Aggies spread nine hits over seven innings. Meanwhile, Aggie right-hander Celisha Walker earned her fifth win of the season in the circle. The Aggies got a measure of revenge with Tuesday’s win. The Lobos (17-18) won a 3-2 decision in Las Cruces April 4.

    Iowa wins finale, 10-6 The Albuquerque Isotopes failed to pull off the sweep of the Iowa Cubs to close out the season-opening homestand Thursday. The Cubs scored five times in the fourth inning and three more times in the seventh to win 10-7 at Isotopes Park. Iowa’s Bobby Scales had two doubles and five RBI to lead his team to the win. Randy Keisler (0-1) lasted just 3-2/3 innings for Albuquerque.  (5-3), taking the loss. Albuquerque will hit the road for the first time in 2011, playing three games starting tonight at Oklahoma City. They will visit Iowa for four games starting Tuesday. Albuquerque returns home April 23.

    Albuquerque opens 2011 season with win The Albuquerque Isotopes opened their 2011 season with a victory Thursday night at Isotopes Park. Jay Gibbons and Dee Gordon both earned three RBI Thursday as Albuquerque cruised to a 10-5 season-opening win over the Omaha Storm Chasers. The win gives the Isotopes an 8-1 franchise record in opening day games. Albuquerque broke open Thursday’s contest in the sixth, scoring five runs. Gibbons had a bases-clearing double and Gordon had a base-knock during the inning to extend the Isotopes lead to 10-4.

  • Basketball: Fans vote Gordon's dunk No. 1
    Lobo Drew Gordon’s slam dunk off a missed shot from teammate Alex Kirk was named the Top Dunk of the Year in the entire nation on a basketball-dedicated Web site. The video clip of Gordon’s powerful dunk against San Diego State University in The Pit during Mountain West Conference play earned 59 percent of the votes cast on the  Ballin’ is a Habit website as best dunk in the nation for this season. “I appreciate all of the love and support from everyone that voted for me for dunk of the year,” Gordon said. After Kirk misfired on a baseline jumper, Gordon raced from the free throw line to grab the rebound with his right hand and slammed the ball home.

  • New Mexico women's basketball head coach retires
    ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — University of New Mexico officials confirmed Monday that women's basketball head coach Don Flanagan is retiring. Flanagan is the most successful coach in the history of the New Mexico women's program. He posted a 340-168 record in 16 seasons, took the Lobos to the NCAA Tournament eight times and won a handful of conference championships. Flanagan had one year left on a four-year contract extension. The Albuquerque Journal reported that Flanagan made the decision after five freshman players informed him of their intentions to quit the team.
