  • LA blanked in 4A preseason rankings
    The Los Alamos Hilltopper football team appears to have something to prove to the rest of Class 4A this season. The Hilltoppers, who open their season Aug. 27 at Pojoaque, didn’t garner a single vote in the first New Mexico High School Coaches Association poll of the year. The polls were released Wednesday. Los Alamos, which is coming off a 4-6 season, went 3-1 in District 2-4A, finishing second in that race but failed to make the state playoffs. However, some unanswered questions about the team, most notably how it will fill the quarterback spot after the departure of Kory Balog, remain heading into the 2011 season.

    Offense comes up big as Isotopes rout Bees The Albuquerque Isotopes pounded out 21 hits Tuesday night to pick up the first win of their series against the Salt Lake City Bees. Trevor Hoffman went 5-for-5 with five RBI and eight of the nine Isotopes hitters in the game got at least two hits as the Isotopes won big, 19-6, at Isotopes Park. Albuquerque failed to score in just two at-bats Tuesday. It went up 6-2 after two innings and 8-3 after four innings before scoring eight runs in the bottom of the seventh. The Isotopes had 10 runs and 13 hits off Bees starter Matt Palmer (7-10, 7.37 ERA), who lasted just 4-1/3 innings.

  • Kirk is OK following back surgery
    Former Los Alamos Hilltopper basketball standout Alex Kirk underwent back surgery Tuesday. Kirk, who will be going into his sophomore year at the University of New Mexico, now plays for the Lobos. The surgery was performed in Phoenix and the 6-foot-11 center was resting comfortably afterwards. Lobo head coach Steve Alford said Tuesday Kirk had undergone “very successful back surgery to relieve a herniated disc….We fully expect that Alex will recover 100 percent.” Alan Kirk, Alex Kirk’s father and his high school coach, is with his son in Phoenix and said the surgery went well, although it was unclear how much rehabilitation Alex would need before returning.

    Bees sting Isotopes, 9-6 The Albuquerque Isotopes dropped the second of its four-game home series to the Salt Lake City Bees Monday night. The Bees scored five runs in the fifth inning, four of them charged to starter John Ely, to win Monday’s contest 9-6. The two teams meet again tonight at 7:05 p.m. The series and the current Istopes homestand wraps up Wednesday. Salt Lake City finished with 16 hits in the game, 11 off Ely (6-5), who lasted just 4-1/3 innings. Albuquerque dropped the series opener to Salt Lake City, 11-8 Sunday. It trails Round Rock by nine games in the PCL American Southern division with 25 games remaining in the 2011 season.

    Late rally lifts Albuquerque The Albuquerque Isotopes closed out their eight-game road swing with a win Tuesday. The Isotopes scored twice in the top of the ninth to top New Orleans 6-4. Ivan De Jesus and Russell Mitchell both had RBI singles to give the Isotopes the victory. Albuquerque (57-54) had lost four straight games and five of six on the road trip before Tuesday’s win. At 7:05 p.m., the Isotopes return to Albuquerque to open a four-game series against the Tacoma Rainiers. Following that series, they will host Salt Lake City for four games.

    Late HR lifts Albuquerque Russell Mitchell belted a two-run home run in the final at-bat for the Albuquerque Isotopes to lift them past Omaha’s Storm Chasers Tuesday. Mitchell’s homer off Everett Teaford gave the Isotopes a 6-4 win over the Storm Chasers in Omaha. Albuquerque, which was just coming off an up-and-down homestand and had lost two straight to New Orleans, opened its eight-game road trip with a badly-needed win. Albuquerque also chopped a game off division-leading Round Rock’s edge, although Round Rock still holds a five-game advantage.
