    Indictments handed down for illegal killing ALBUQUERQUE – A grand jury has indicted two men and a juvenile male from Rio Rancho on several counts in connection with the illegal killing of five pronghorn antelope Feb. 10 on the King Ranch near Zia Pueblo. Michael Yarbrough, 21, Travis Miller, 18, and a 17-year-old are accused of cutting a fence, illegally trespassing on the ranch and shooting two bucks and three doe antelope. The heads of the bucks were removed and all the carcasses were left in a pile to rot. There was no legal hunt occurring at the time.
  • Bandelier goes into Stage II fire restrictions as of today
    Bandelier National Monument has gone into Stage II fire restrictions starting today. Stage II restrictions include barring the use of campfires, charcoal fires and puts a damper on smoking in areas other than those specifically designated around the monument. Moving up to Stage II restrictions came as little surprise considering recent hot, dry weather and fire potential in and around the Jemez Mountains.

    Catches of the Week   Rio Grande: June 5, Kenneth Hall of Los Lunas caught a 21-inch, 5-pound walleye. He was fishing the river below Elephant Butte and using a Johnson silver minnow with a pearl minnow trailer. Clayton Lake: June 6, Mikey Montoya of Clayton caught a 6.5-pound walleye and on June 9 caught a 9-pound walleye. He was using a spinner. Conchas Lake: June 7, Jon Corn of Roswell caught two 10-pound catfish. He was using stink bait.

He was using a custom-dyed skinny dipper. June 3, Rodney Gonzales of Grants caught a 31-inch, 14-pound catfish. June 3, Doug Manley of Albuquerque caught a 45-inch tiger musky. He was using a Dynamic FX Fury. Caballo Lake: June 2, Korin Ortiz of El Paso caught a 24-inch, 5-pound walleye. Korin was trolling a white jig-nightcrawler combination.

    Albuquerque faces Memphis, Round Rock in homestand The Albuquerque Isotopes open a seven-game homestand tonight when they start their four-game series with the Memphis Redbirds at Isotopes Park. The Isotopes are scheduled to start Michael Antonini (1-3, 4.84 ERA) against Memphis’ Nick Additon (1-6, 5.40) in tonight’s opener. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. Several promotions are planned for this homestand, including tonight’s home appliance giveaway. Fireworks are scheduled for Saturday night and $.50 hot dog night is Monday.

    Lobos bounced by Creighton in  Los Angeles regional LOS ANGELES – The University of New Mexico Lobo baseball team’s season came to an end Sunday afternoon as the Lobos dropped a 7-2 decision to Creighton University in an elimination game in the UCLA regional. The Lobos finished the season with a 37-24 record, which tied for the fourth-most victories in a single season in school history. “I have to tip my hat to Creighton,” UNM manager Ray Birmingham said. “(It was a) great job by Creighton. They pitched extremely well … and made the pitches when they needed to make them.”
