    Northeast   Charette Lakes: Fishing is fair for trout and perch. Cimarron River: More water is open from the Palisades to Ute Park but water level is very low. Clayton Lake: The lake has been recently stocked with trout but fish are not biting yet. No report on walleye. Conchas Lake: Fishing for walleye is good at about 50 to 60 feet with minnows. Water temp is 49 degrees. Costilla Creek: Still iced over. Coyote Creek: The creek is still iced over.

    Girls Class 4A: Grants’ offense comes up big in win over Artesia All of the top four seeds in the Class 4A girls basketball state tournament made it through to Thursday’s semifinal round. Top-seeded Grants dropped in a whopping 81 points as it knocked off eighth-seeded Artesia Tuesday afternoon at The Pit. Grants, which defeated Los Alamos in last weekend’s opening round, has a tall order in Thursday’s semifinal, however, when it takes on 18-time state champ Kirtland Central. The Grants-Kirtland Central contest is set for 1:15 p.m. in The Pit. The other semifinal matches No. 2 seed Roswell against No. 3 seed Piedra Vista. That game is set for 9:45 a.m.

  • Basketball playoffs continue at The Pit
    Out of seven teams from District 2 that made it into the boys and girls state basketball playoffs, only one was left standing following this weekend. The Class 4A state girls basketball tournament resumed this morning at The Pit in Albuquerque, while boys basketball tournament continues Wednesday with the quarterfinal round, also at The Pit.

    Northeast Charette Lakes: Closed for the season and will reopen next spring. Cimarron River: No read on flows due to ice. The Cimarron is unfishable until spring. Clayton Lake: Closed for the season and will reopen in the spring. Conchas Lake: Fishing pressure has been slow due to cold temperatures and wind, but a few walleye have been caught. Costilla Creek: No report due to ice. Coyote Creek: Closed for the season and will reopen in the spring. Eagle Nest Lake: 18 inches of ice and very windy. Fishing is good for yellow perch and rainbows caught with Power Bait and jigs with worms.  A few pike have been taken on large jigs.

  • Lobos crush Falcons at The Pit
    ALBUQUERQUE (AP) — Drew Gordon scored 12 of New Mexico’s first 18 points and Hugh Greenwood opened the second half with 14 straight points as the Lobos defeated Air Force 86-56 Wednesday. Greenwood finished with a game- and career-high 22 points with six rebounds, and Gordon had 17 points and 11 rebounds for New Mexico (23-6, 9-4 Mountain West), which ended a two-game losing streak. Taylor Broekhuis scored 11 points to lead Air Force (13-14, 3-10). “I thought tonight, we did an awful of good things,” New Mexico coach Steve Alford said. “We shared the basketball. We didn’t turn the ball over. We dominated the glass. I thought our defense was really back to being that stingy defense we’ve been seeing.”

    Singing auditions are March 10 The Albuquerque Isotopes will hold their annual National Anthem auditions March 10. The auditions take place at Isotopes Park’s Club Level Lounge from 9 a.m.-noon. Those wishing to audition need to fill out a pre-registration form. Forms can be found at www.abqisotopes.com. The audition is being limited to the first 50 performers who pre-register. Those who are selected at the audition will perform at an Isotopes’ game during the 2012 season. Vote for field in need of makeover
