  • True’s run will continue in 2013
    ALBUQUERQUE (AP) — An ultra-marathon that honors the running traditions of a Mexican tribe will go on next year, even though its founder died last month in southwestern New Mexico. Ultra-runner Micah True’s body was found March 31 after he failed to return from a routine run. His agent, Scott Leese, says a foundation and memorial fund have been created to honor the 58-year-old. Leese says the Caballo Blanco Foundation will focus on True’s support for the indigenous Tarahumara of Mexico, their running traditions and the annual 50-mile-plus ultra-marathon through Copper Canyon. Nicknamed Caballo Blanco, True started the race in 2003 as a way to highlight the Tarahumara’s extreme running prowess.

    The Albuquerque Isotopes couldn't hang on to an early three-run lead in their season opening contest Thursday. The Omaha Storm Chasers scored four runs in the seventh to take the lead and never looked back as they downed the Isotopes 8-4 at Werner Park. Thursday's game was the first of eight on the road for Albuquerque to start the 2012 season. Its home opener is set for April 13. Albuquerque left 14 runners on base through the first six innings and only scored one run after the fourth inning. Albuquerque had eight hits in the contest and drew a whopping 10 walks but went just 1-for-13 with runners in scoring position.

    Catches of the week   San Juan River: March 24, Tia Hernandez of Albuquerque caught a 24-inch brown trout. She was fishing below Cottonwood campgrounds and using a worm. Navajo Lake: March 31, Donna Herrera of Farmington caught a 9.50-pound northern pike. She was using a tube. Mike Kitts of Farmington caught a 9.65-pound northern pike. He was using a reaction bait. Mike Tafoya of La Plata caught a 4.62-pound largemouth bass. Johnny Johnson of Farmington caught a 4.96-pound smallmouth bass. He was using a reaction bait. April 1, Dalton King of Aztec caught a 3.96-pound largemouth on a jerk bait and two northern pike about 9 pounds each on spinner baits.

  • Aggies baseball pick up third win of year over Lobos, 7-5
    LAS CRUCES — The New Mexico State University Aggie baseball team extended its winning streak to 14-games after defeating intrastate New Mexico 7-5 at Presley Askew Field Tuesday. It’s the third time this season NMSU has defeated the Lobos and the fifth-straight victory over UNM dating back to the 2010 season. The Aggies are now 23-8 on the season while UNM slipped to 12-15. NMSU starting pitcher Adam Mott remained undefeated, improving to 4-0, as he worked six innings, striking out four batters.  Closer Scott Coffman earned his sixth save, going  two innings and striking out two batters without allowing a Lobo to get on board.

  • Isotopes open 10th season at Omaha
    ALBUQUERQUE — To start the 2012 season, the Albuquerque Isotopes will become very familiar with the Omaha Storm Chasers and the Iowa Cubs. But it might take awhile for the Isotopes to get familiar with one another. The Isotopes, Albuquerque’s Triple-A franchise, throw out their first pitch on the road Thursday at Omaha. After an eight-game road swing to open the season, they will be home April 13 for eight games against those same teams. This will be season No. 10 for the Isotopes since making their debut in 2003. Since that time, the Isotopes have had three managers and two parent clubs, including their current Major League Baseball franchise, the Los Angeles Dodgers.

  • Friends recall Micah True: passionate and playful
    ALBUQUERQUE (AP) — Up mountainsides, through deserts and the wildest of rugged terrain, there was little that could break the serenity or solitude of Micah True as he ran. Only, perhaps, the pounding beat of his heart or the rhythm of his feet as they hit the trail, mile after mile after mile. For True, running — the pure act of traveling relentlessly long distances — was a passion that needed no justification. To those who knew him well, it also brought forth an intense playfulness in the 58-year-old ultra-marathon runner.

    Catches of the Week   Heron Lake: March 21, Frank Ortiz caught a 10-pound lake trout. He was using a horsehead jig. Quemado Lake: March 23, Hamp Vandever of Thoreau caught a 20-inch rainbow trout. He was using salmon eggs. Elephant Butte Lake: March 25, Aaron Smith of Los Lunas caught and released a 4.19-pound largemouth bass. He was using a jerk bait.

    Northwest Abiquiu Lake: There have been very few anglers on the lake. Fishing has been slow for all species. Albuquerque area drains: Fishing on the Albuquerque and Bernalillo Drains was slow. We had no reports from Corrales, Peralta or Belen. Bluewater Lake: The lake is free of ice and fishing for trout has been good for anglers using corn and yellow Power Bait . Fishing for tiger musky has been fair using in-line spinners, swim baits and jerk baits for musky up to 36 inches. The surface water temp was about 38 degrees.
