  • Fuego wins at home
    The Santa Fe Fuego semi-professional baseball team snapped an eight-game losing streak Thursday night. The Fuego, a startup franchise in the Pecos League, which features six teams from the local region — four of them play in New Mexico — has struggled early on in the season, but earned a 12-5 victory over the league-leading Las Cruces Vaqueros at Fort Marcy Park Thursday. In that game, Santa Fe (4-11) jumped on Las Cruces ace Bruce Amende, hitting him up for 11 runs in four innings. Designated hitter Kieran Bradford went 3-for-3 with a solo home run and scored three times. Las Cruces (9-5) currently is on top of the Pecos League standings, one of just two teams with a winning record in the league.

  • Fishing Report 06-01-12
    Northeast   Cabresto Lake: The lake and campground closed May 14 and will stay closed for about six months while the dam is being rebuilt. Charette Lakes: Fishing was fair using Power Bait and Pistol Petes for trout. Fishing was fair using worms and Power Bait for perch. Cimarron River: Fishing was good using bead head pheasant tails, Cimarron worms and bead head red San Juan worms. A few fish were also taken on night crawlers and small spinners. Water flow below Eagle Nest Lake as of Monday was 49 cfs.

    Isotopes pick up shutout win The Albuquerque Isotopes evened their series Wednesday night against the New Orleans Zephyrs, shutting out the Zephyrs 4-0 on the road. A trio of Isotopes pitchers combined for the shutout against New Orleans, with Stephen Fife (4-4) going six innings to earn the win. The shutout came just one night after Albuquerque was held to two hits at New Orleans. The third game of the series is tonight with John Ely (4-3) scheduled to start on the bump. Fife, who lowered his season ERA to 5.43, pitched around seven New Orleans hits, a walk and a hit batsman in his six innings of work.

  • LA gets no one on All-State 4A teams
    Only three teams were represented on this year’s All-State Class 4A softball first team and Los Alamos wasn’t one of those four. Five players from Piedra Vista were named to the first team for the 2012 season by the New Mexico High School Coaches Association, which does the statewide selections. Just behind Piedra Vista was Los Lunas, which earned four selections, while Aztec outfielder Dakota Kaufman was the lone representative from the rest of Class 4A. The remainder of the state fared only slightly better on the second team All-4A roster, with Artesia placing four players and Farmington getting one slot. Aztec had three more second team selections and Piedra Vista had one more. No Hilltoppers were named to this year’s All-State teams.

    Isotopes can manage just two hits in loss The Albuquerque Isotopes had their three-game winning streak snapped Tuesday night in their road trip opener against the New Orleans Zephyrs. Tim Federowicz hit a solo home run with one out in the eighth inning to break up a no-hit bid by the Zephyrs Brad Hand, but the Isotopes could muster little else in a 4-1 loss at New Orleans. The Zephyrs scored twice in the first and twice in the fourth to earn the win. Albuquerque’s Will Savage (7-2) took the loss, going seven innings.

  • Police: 5-time Champ Johnny Tapia Found Dead--Video Extra
    ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Johnny Tapia, the five-time boxing champion whose turbulent career was marked by cocaine addiction, alcohol, depression and run-ins with the law, was found dead Sunday at his Albuquerque home. He was 45. Authorities were called to the house at about 7:45 p.m. on Sunday, spokesman Robert Gibbs said. The death didn't appear to be suspicious, he said. Tapia won five championships in three weight classes, winning the WBA bantamweight title, the IBF and WBO junior bantamweight titles and the IBF featherweight belt.

    Fresno tops Albuquerque, 10-7 The Albuquerque Isotopes weathered a big inning by the Fresno Grizzlies in Tuesday’s game, but couldn’t pull off the same feat Wednesday. Fresno scored five runs in the top of the fifth inning to defeat Albuquerque 10-7 Wednesday night at Isotopes Park. The finale of their four-game series is tonight in Albuquerque. Fernando Nieve (1-2, 11.19 ERA) struggled in the fifth after replacing starting pitcher Mike Parisi. Nieve surrendered two home runs in the inning, including a grand slam by Fresno’s Roger Kieschnick after the Grizzlies loaded the bases on a single, an error by first baseman Jeff Baisley and a hit batsman.

  • State Notes 05-23-12
    Aggies are top seed in WAC playoffs The New Mexico State University baseball team enters the 2012 Western Athletic Conference tournament this week as the No. 1 seed. The Aggies will play Thursday at 8 p.m. in Mesa, Ariz. against the lowest remaining seed in the tournament. The WAC tournament is a double-elimination tournament so the Aggies will play another game on Friday with the time to be announced at the outcome of their first game. Live stats of those games will available online at NMStateSports.com. NMSU earned a share of WAC regular season champion in 2012, finishing off its season with a 15-2 victory over San Jose State. It was NMSU’s first regular season conference championship in program history.

  • Ealey makes her mark once again at Class 4A meet
    ALBUQUERQUE — It will be a long time before Los Alamos High School will see another athlete the like of Chase Ealey. If ever. It will certainly be a long time before the Hilltoppers will have an athlete as successful. Ealey, a two-sport star for the Hilltoppers, put an exclamation point on a career filled with highlights last week at the Class 4A track and field championship meet. For the second straight year, Ealey won three individual state titles and had a hand in taking a pair of relay state titles. Ealey picked up 26 points, once again becoming the top-scoring athlete in 4A, topping her total of 23.5 one year earlier.
