    Fresno tops Albuquerque, 10-7 The Albuquerque Isotopes weathered a big inning by the Fresno Grizzlies in Tuesday’s game, but couldn’t pull off the same feat Wednesday. Fresno scored five runs in the top of the fifth inning to defeat Albuquerque 10-7 Wednesday night at Isotopes Park. The finale of their four-game series is tonight in Albuquerque. Fernando Nieve (1-2, 11.19 ERA) struggled in the fifth after replacing starting pitcher Mike Parisi. Nieve surrendered two home runs in the inning, including a grand slam by Fresno’s Roger Kieschnick after the Grizzlies loaded the bases on a single, an error by first baseman Jeff Baisley and a hit batsman.

    Aggies are top seed in WAC playoffs The New Mexico State University baseball team enters the 2012 Western Athletic Conference tournament this week as the No. 1 seed. The Aggies will play Thursday at 8 p.m. in Mesa, Ariz. against the lowest remaining seed in the tournament. The WAC tournament is a double-elimination tournament so the Aggies will play another game on Friday with the time to be announced at the outcome of their first game. Live stats of those games will available online at NMStateSports.com. NMSU earned a share of WAC regular season champion in 2012, finishing off its season with a 15-2 victory over San Jose State. It was NMSU’s first regular season conference championship in program history.

  • Ealey makes her mark once again at Class 4A meet
    ALBUQUERQUE — It will be a long time before Los Alamos High School will see another athlete the like of Chase Ealey. If ever. It will certainly be a long time before the Hilltoppers will have an athlete as successful. Ealey, a two-sport star for the Hilltoppers, put an exclamation point on a career filled with highlights last week at the Class 4A track and field championship meet. For the second straight year, Ealey won three individual state titles and had a hand in taking a pair of relay state titles. Ealey picked up 26 points, once again becoming the top-scoring athlete in 4A, topping her total of 23.5 one year earlier.

For catches of the week, include name, date, and location, type of fish, length and weight if possible and bait, lure or fly used.   Cochiti Lake: May 9, Mike Gianfriddo of Albuquerque caught a 4.5-pound smallmouth bass. He was using a Mepps spinner. Ute Lake: May 10, Kevin Smith of Clovis caught and released a 4.5-pound smallmouth bass. He was using a Rat-L-Trap and fishing in 15 feet of water.

    Albuquerque blasted in series opener Thursday night A few days ago, the Albuquerque Isotopes were on a roll, but since then they’ve lost three straight contests, including being on the wrong end of a waxing to start a long homestand. The Isotopes were thumped by the Sacramento River Cats 16-5 at Isotopes Park Thursday. The River Cats pounded out 18 hits and scored 11 times in the first three innings to cruise to the win. Unfortunately for the Isotopes, the River Cats are expecting slugger Manny Ramirez to join the team this weekend as Ramirez starts a rehab assignment.

    The Albuquerque Isotopes were nipped in a close contest Monday at Salt Lake City. Salt Lake City Bees starting pitcher Garrett Richards (4-1) held the Isotopes to just two runs through seven innings as the Bees won the third game of the teams’ four-game series 3-2. It was the first win of the series for Salt Lake City (19-20) against the red-hot Isotopes (24-15), who have won nine of their last 12 decisions, including five of seven on their current eight-game road trip. Richards gave up just four hits through seven innings to pick up the win.

  • Deming is big winner in 4A
    The Deming Wildcats won both ends of the Class 4A golf championship tournament Tuesday. The Wildcat girls shot nearly identical scores both Monday and Tuesday to finish with 709 total shots, 27 shots better than runner-up Albuquerque Academy. The Wildcat boys nipped the St. Pius X Sartans by six strokes, earning a team total of 633. This year’s 4A tournament was played at New Mexico Tech in Socorro. Goddard finished third in girls team play and Artesia was third for the boys. Taylar Jaramillo of Belen won the girls individual title by a five-stroke margin (153) while Deryk Perales of Deming took the boys title by just two strokes.
