  • Auburn, NMSU seek wins
    AUBURN, Ala. (AP) — The Auburn Tigers used to treat games like this as nearly automatic wins. Now, they’re looking at Saturday’s visit from struggling New Mexico State (1-7) as more in the must-win category. The Tigers (1-7) are hoping another quarterback change and an opponent afflicted with some of the same issues will give them something to cheer about in a lost season that has fans clamoring for coach Gene Chizik’s firing. Chizik’s just clamoring for his players to win a game. “They know where we’re at in terms of urgency to win, and they want to win,” the embattled coach said. “We’re certainly not in a position to overlook any of our opponents. I think our team understands the urgency of the game.” Auburn has lost five games in a row and gave up a school-record 671 yards in last week’s 63-21 humbling by No. 16 Texas A&M. Seemingly unwinnable games against No. 7 Georgia and No. 1 Alabama still await. The Tigers are 22-1/2-point favorites in this one. If last week felt like rock-bottom for the season, losing to a one-win Western Athletic Conference team would feel even worse. NMSU has dropped its last seven games since an opening win over Sacramento State but played well No. 22 Louisiana Tech close in last week’s loss.

  • WAC coaches pick Aggie men’s hoops as No. 1 in preseason poll
    LAS CRUCES — The New Mexico State University Aggie men’s basketball team was voted to win the WAC title in the WAC Coaches’ Preseason poll and finished second in the media poll. The 10 head coaches selected the Aggies to finish first with five first-place votes and 77 points. Utah State captured second place with five first-place votes and 76 points. Denver took third place with 65 points. For the Aggies, senior forward Tyrone Watson and sophomore guard Daniel Mullings earned Preseason All-WAC honors. Utah State junior guard Preston Medlin was tabbed as the league’s preseason player of the year. Mullings earned a first-team nod along with Denver junior forward Chris Udofia, Idaho center Kyle Barone and Louisiana Tech sophomore guard Raheem Appleby. The conference media poll selected Utah State as this year’s favorite. Utah State received 232 points and 15 first-place votes. Medlin was named the preseason player of the year in the WAC.   • Lobo men's hoops picked 3rd in MW
    COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The University of New Mexico men’s basketball team, which won both a share of the regular season title and the conference tournament title, was picked to finish third in the official Mountain West Preseason Media Poll. The media poll was released Monday. The Lobos were picked behind No. 20 San Diego State and No. 19 UNLV. The conference also released the preseason All-Mountain West teams, and for the third straight year, UNM is represented on the squad. Kendall Williams, a junior guard from Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., is one of four juniors on the five-man preseason All-Conference team. Williams joins Chase Tapley and Jamaal Franklin of San Diego State, Deonta Burton of Nevada, and UNLV’s Mike Moser. Franklin was named Preseason Player of the Year and his teammate Dwayne Polee II was named the Co-Newcomer of the Year, along with Bryce Dejean-Jones of UNLV. UNLV’s Anthony Bennett was named Preseason Freshman of the Year. The Lobos picked up 122 points in the poll of 18 media members from around the Mountain West, two members from each of the nine media markets of the league. San Diego State received 10 first place votes to edge UNLV in the voting 153-151. The Rebels took the other eight first place votes.

  • Fishing Report 10-20-12
    Northwest Abiquiu Lake: Fishing was fair using jigs, tubes, grubs, senkos, crank baits and worms for smallmouth bass. Fishing for walleye was slow but there were a few taken on grubs, tubes and spinner/nightcrawler combinations. We had no reports on other species. Albuquerque Area Drains: We had no reports from anglers this week. Animas River: As of Monday morning flow near Aztec was 133 cfs. We had no reports from anglers. Bluewater Lake: Fishing was fair using crank baits, swim baits and spinners for tiger musky. Fishing for all other species was slow. Canjilon Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week. Chama River: Monday morning water flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 53 cfs and 100 cfs respectively. Fishing below El Vado was good using nightcrawlers, Power Bait, copper John Barrs, bead-head prince nymphs, spinners and salmon eggs for a mix of brown and rainbow trout. Trout fishing below Abiquiu was fair using copper John Barrs, nightcrawlers and Power Bait. A section of the river from El Vado Lake to the west boundary of the Rio Chama Wildlife and Fishing Area opened to salmon snagging Oct. 1 but we had no reports from anglers working this area. Cochiti Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

    Northwest Abiquiu Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using tubes, worms, senkos and crank baits for smallmouth bass. A few walleye were taken by anglers using spinner nightcrawler combinations. We had no reports on other species. Animas River: As of Monday morning flow near Aztec was 64 cfs. We had no reports from anglers. Bluewater Lake: Fishing was fair to good using crank baits, large swim baits and spinners for tiger musky. We had no reports on other species. Canjilon Lakes: Trout fishing was slow but there were a few fish taken by anglers using spinners, Power Bait and salmon eggs. Chama River: Monday morning water flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 300 cfs and 257 cfs respectively. The flow below El Vado is expected to be down to 50 cfs by the end of the week. Fishing below El Vado was very good using nightcrawlers, Power Bait, copper John Barrs, wooly buggers, spinners and salmon eggs for a mix of brown and rainbow trout. Trout fishing below Abiquiu was fair to good using wooly buggers, nightcrawlers and Power Bait. A section of the river from El Vado Lake to the west boundary of the Rio Chama Wildlife and Fishing Area opened to salmon snagging Oct. 1 but we had no reports from anglers working this area.

  • UNM falls to Falcons again, 2-1
    COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The ninth-ranked University of New Mexico Lobos men’s soccer team lost at the hands of Air Force (6-6-1) for the second time in a week by the score of 2-1 Friday night. Air Force’s Caleb Downey scored the game-winner in the 75th minute for the Falcons. Downey also tallied the game-winner for Air Force in their overtime win at the UNM  Soccer Complex one week ago. The loss marks the first time New Mexico has lost to Air Force twice in a season since 2001. The Lobos suffered their third loss of the season and currently have a record of 9-3-0 (2-2-0 MPSF). They held the advantage in shots (16-11) and corner kicks (7-4) for the match, but it wouldn’t be enough to overcome the Falcons. The Lobos were out-shot by their opponent (6-5) in the first half for the first time since UNM’s double overtime win over UC Irvine Sept. 16. Of  New Mexico’s five shots, only Matthew Gibbon’s attempt in the ninth minute was on goal. New Mexico will look to bounce back in their second road match of the weekend. The Lobos will travel to Denver University to face the Pioneers this afternoon. UNM conceded the match’s first goal in the fifth minute on a 30-yard shot from Kevin Durr.
