    Kirk, Bairstow come up big ALBUQUERQUE (AP) — Cameron Bairstow isn’t usually known as instant offense when he comes off the bench. He provided just that when he entered Wednesday night’s game early for No. 25 New Mexico. Bairstow finished with a career-high 16 points, helping propel the Lobos (7-0) to a 76-58 win over Mercer. “Cam came in and really gave us a burst early in this game,” Lobos coach Steve Alford said. The inside play of Bairstow and Alex Kirk, who finished with 16 points and 13 rebounds for his second consecutive double-double, overwhelmed the Bears (3-4). “I thought our bigs would be able to compete a little better,” Mercer coach Bob Hoffman said. The 7-foot Kirk drew most of Hoffman’s attention. “He was fantastic,” Hoffman said. “He had a couple of pops when the game was still in jeopardy. He pops out there and hits a 15-footer like it’s candy and he just did it all night. So he was just really good.” Alford appreciated what Bairstow brought to the game, especially with Kirk struggling early. “I thought (Kirk) started slow tonight. He didn’t have a good first 5 minutes,” Alford said. “We took him out early to try to get his second wind early.”

    Lobos crack top 25 rankings The University of New Mexico Lobo men’s basketball team got nods in both major college hoops polls Monday. The Lobos (6-0), on the strength of their win at the Paradise Jam tournament in the U.S. Virgin Islands, earned a No. 23 ranking in the USA Today coaches poll and a No. 25 ranking in the Associated Press poll. The Lobos picked up 68 points in the USA Today poll — it had 16 the previous week — and had 141 points in the AP poll to crack the top 25. This is the third time in four seasons under head coach Steve Alford the Lobos have earned a spot in the two major national college polls. Prior to the 2009-10 season, the Lobos hadn’t been in the top 25 since the final poll of 1998-99. Indiana (6-0) sits atop both the USA Today and AP polls. Duke (6-0) is second in both polls and Michigan (5-0) is ranked third. UNM topped Portland 69-54 Sunday night in Albuquerque. In that game, former Los Alamos Hilltopper standout Alex Kirk had 14 points, leading all scorers. Kirk was 6 of 10 shooting from the floor and also grabbed 11 rebounds, who with teammate Cameron Bairstow also posted the game-high total. The Lobos led just 30-27 at the half of Sunday’s game, but started the second half on a 10-0 run to take control.

  • Lobos win, Kirk scores 11 points
    Alex Kirk came just one rebound short of a double-double as the University of New Mexico Lobos thumped the Idaho Vandals Friday night. The Lobos used a 19-0 second half run to pull away from the Vandals Friday at The Pit, winning 73-58. Along with Kirk, a former standout at Los Alamos, Demitrius Walker had 19 points coming off the bench. Walker went 5-for-5 from 3-point range to lead the effort and Kirk, who has made his way into the starting lineup for UNM, finished with 11 points and 9 rebounds and 3 blocked shots. “(Kirk) is making things hard on teams in the paint,” Lobo head coach Steve Alford said. “He is really starting to get comfortable and is really doing a lot of good things.” The win improves UNM to 5-0 on the season. The two teams were tied at 36 at the half, but the Vandals (1-3) moved out to a 49-46 lead in the second half before the Lobos’ big run. Kirk said afterward there was a battle in the paint. “I would say it’s pretty physical and they’ve all been,” Kirk said. “Some of the games at the (U.S. Virgin Islands) were physical with the different refereeing and stuff like that is something we need to adjust to.” Kirk went 4-for-7 from the field and 3-for-4 from the foul line.

  • Fishing Report 11-23-12
    Northeast   Cabresto Lake: The lake and campground closed May 14 and will stay closed while the dam is being rebuilt. Charette Lakes: Closed for the season. Clayton Lake: Closed for the season. Conchas Lake: The Cannon Cove Campground boat ramp is open and fully functional. Other ramps remain closed. Fishing was slow but there were a few walleye taken by anglers using spoons. We had no reports on other species. The surface water temp was in the low 50s. Coyote Creek: We had no reports from anglers this week. Eagle Nest Lake: Kokanee snagging slowed considerably over the past weekend as only a few fish were taken near the boat ramp area. Anglers are reminded that there is no snagging permitted on the boat ramp. Fishing for trout was slow to fair using roe sacs, Power Bait and salmon eggs. We had no reports on other species. Hopewell Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. Lake Maloya: Fishing was very good using spoons, Power Bait and white and multicolored mini marshmallows for trout up to 20 inches. Los Pinos: We had no reports from anglers this week. Manzano Lake: Trout fishing was slow but there were a few taken on Power Bait and salmon eggs. Maxwell Lake 13: Closed for the season.

    Class 4A football playoffs continue The Class 4A state football playoffs continue today with the top four seeds seeing their first postseason action. Top-seeded Goddard, which has been the No. 1 team throughout the 2012 season, will take on eighth-seeded Moriarty tonight at the Wool Bowl. The winner between Goddard and Moriarty will face tonight’s winner between fourth-seeded Belen and fifth-seeded Deming in the Class 4A semifinal next week. There were four blowouts in the first round of the 4A playoffs last week, with none of the games being decided by less than 25 points. Santa Fe, the District 2-4A champion, had the worst go of it in the opening round, losing 63-13 at Aztec. Moriarty topped Farmington 45-20, Deming blanked Roswell 36-0 and Piedra Vista crushed St. Pius X 49-3. Also tonight, No. 2 seed Los Lunas will face Piedra Vista. Saturday, third-seeded Artesia will take on Aztec, the No. 6 seed.

    Lobos’ Snell is co-Player of Week COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Nevada junior guard Deonte Burton and New Mexico junior guard Tony Snell have been named Mountain West Men’s Basketball Co-Players of the Week for games through Nov. 18. This is the first MW career weekly accolade for both players. Snell helped New Mexico to a 3-0 record during the week as the Lobos posted victories over Davidson, Illinois-Chicago and George Mason — New Mexico also knocked off Connecticut in the Paradise Jam Finals Monday, but that game wasn’t considered for last week’s honors. Snell, a Riverside, Calif., native, opened the week with a then career-high 25 points, five rebounds and three assists in an 86-81 victory over the Wildcats in ESPN’s 24 Hours of College Hoops Marathon. Snell scored 11 of his points over the final 20 minutes as the Lobos rallied from a 16-point deficit to mark the program’s sixth-largest comeback overall and second-largest in the second half. He followed that performance with a combined 34 points, six assists and three steals in wins against the UIC Flames (66-59) and GMU Patriots (70-69) in the first two rounds of the Paradise Jam in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, over the weekend.
