    GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Brian Westbrook finally got an opportunity to show he can still do it. News that San Francisco's Frank Gore has a broken right hip means more chances are just ahead.

    Westbrook rushed for 136 yards and a touchdown in place of the injured Gore and the 49ers sent punchless Arizona to its sixth straight loss, 27-6 Monday night in a shower of boos from the Cardinals home crowd.

  • Stanford, Wisconsin, Oklahoma are big BCS winners

    NEW YORK (AP) — Stanford was the big winner in the latest BCS standings.

    The Cardinal, along with Wisconsin, all but locked up bids to the Bowl Championship Series, and Oklahoma earned a spot in the Big 12 title game by outpointing Oklahoma State and Texas A&M on Sunday.

    Auburn and Oregon also switched places at the top of the standings, with the Tigers slipping by the Ducks into first place — but that hardly matters.

  • A party in Albuquerque for undefeated No. 3 TCU

    ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — TCU's players handed out roses on the sideline after defeating New Mexico, symbolizing what's next — a possible Rose Bowl trip.

    The No. 3 Horned Frogs (12-0, 8-0) had just capped a perfect regular season for the second straight year, winning 66-17 on Saturday. Mountain West commissioner Craig Thompson dashed into the boisterous locker room and handed over the trophy for TCU's second consecutive league title.

    One night earlier, the Frogs had another celebration at the team hotel.

  • Football: Boise St. shocked by Nevada

    RENO, Nev. (AP) — For two years, Boise State won every time it took the field. The Broncos had to, if they wanted to be considered a serious team that could one day possibly compete for the BCS title.

    When the inevitable loss came, it hurt in more ways than the Broncos could count.

    No national title game. No BCS bowl. No grudging respect from the big boys in the big conferences.

  • Basketball: Irving, Smith lead No. 1 Duke to another win

    KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kyrie Irving didn't wait long to make his mark at Duke.

    The freshman guard scored 17 points and did an outstanding defensive job on preseason All-America Jacob Pullen and the top-ranked Blue Devils beat No. 4 Kansas State 82-68 on Tuesday night to win the O'Reilly Auto Parts CBE Classic.

    NEW YORK (AP) — Joey Votto and Albert Pujols had a long conversation behind the batting cage before a game a few years ago.

    "There's something about a star player of that magnitude kind of pulling you in and saying, it's OK, we can talk, don't be a rookie right now, we're going to talk like men," Votto said. "I think he made me feel comfortable and a little more confident."

    Baylor had one more shot to topple the No. 1 Huskies and end their record winning streak. But the No. 2 Lady Bears simply ran out of time, their last try a little too short and a little too late.

  • Baseball: Posey, Feliz picked as Rookies of the Year

    NEW YORK (AP) — San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey and Texas Rangers closer Neftali Feliz wound up together on the winning side Monday when they were voted the Rookies of the Year.

    Earlier this month, Posey singled off Feliz as the Giants beat Texas in the clinching Game 5 of the World Series.

    "It's hard to believe it's been two weeks," Posey said.
