    PASADENA, Calif. (AP) — When Tank Carder leaped with perfect timing and swatted Wisconsin's final pass to the turf, the TCU linebacker felt as if he got a boost from every player at every school that never even imagined playing in the Rose Bowl.

    Sure, these unbeaten Horned Frogs realized they couldn't win the national title. They still celebrated their perfection on the hallowed Pasadena turf in the name of all the little guys outside the monolithic powers of major college football.

    STANFORD, Calif. (AP) — Maya Moore and everybody around UConn realized how much this meant to Stanford after several near misses against the mighty Huskies — one in the Final Four, another that cost the Cardinal the 2010 NCAA title.

    No. 1 Connecticut's remarkable run is over, a 90-game winning streak stopped by an inspired Stanford squad determined to protect its own impressive mark: 52 straight home wins at Maples Pavilion.

  • Footbal: Webb-led Vikings upset Eagles Tuesday night

    PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Written off by nearly everyone, the Minnesota Vikings wouldn't let two extra days sitting around a hotel bring them down.

    After all they've been through this season, it may have given them extra motivation.

    Rookie Joe Webb threw for 195 yards and ran for a touchdown in his first career start filling in for an injured Brett Favre, and the lowly Vikings stunned Michael Vick and the NFC East champion Philadelphia Eagles 24-14 in the NFL's first Tuesday game since 1946.

    PITTSBURGH (AP) — No one needs to explain this math to the Pittsburgh Steelers: It's easier to get to the Super Bowl by winning two games rather than three.

    On a short week with no real practice following a tough loss, the Steelers were determined not to get distracted and lose to the poor-record Carolina Panthers. Do that, and they might be adding an extra work week to their playoff schedule.

    LAS VEGAS (AP) — Boise State will have to live forever with the big one that got away. Finishing the season looking like one of the best teams in the nation will at least help ease some of the short-term pain of what might have been.

    Flat at first in a game they didn't seem to want to be in, the 10th-ranked Broncos were dominant the rest of the way Wednesday night in dismantling No. 20 Utah 26-3.

  • Football: Favre knocked out, Bears beat Vikes to win North

    MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Only Brett Favre could get hurt in a game he was supposedly too beat up to play in.

    After Minnesota's battered quarterback walked off the snow-coated field with what he later called a concussion, Jay Cutler and the Chicago Bears took back the division title Favre is so used to winning.

    Cutler's three touchdown passes and record-setting Devin Hester's dashing kick returns helped the Bears fly past the Vikings 40-14 on a frosty, hard-hitting Monday night to clinch the NFC North.

    HOUSTON (AP) — Joe Flacco was clicking, the defense was dominating and even the special teams scored a touchdown.

    The Baltimore Ravens seemed to be rolling to an easy victory in Houston on Monday night, then nearly let it all slip away.

    Luckily for the Ravens, the Texans are inept at finishing games.

    NEW YORK (AP) — Cam Newton won the Heisman Trophy — as if there was any doubt.

    Whether he gets to keep it is still to be determined.

    Auburn's hulking quarterback brushed off an NCAA investigation of his recruitment as he did so many tacklers this season and captured college football's biggest individual award Saturday night in a landslide vote.

  • Remembering Elizabeth Edwards

    Elizabeth Edwards, 61, died of cancer on Tuesday – six years after she was diagnosed the day after the 2004 election when her husband John was a vice presidential candidate. A family friend said Wednesday that she will be honored Saturday at Edenton Street United Methodist Church in Raleigh, N.C. Details of the plans have yet to be announced by the family. The public is allowed to attend the event. Mourners were asked to make donations to the Wade Edwards Foundation, which was created in honor of Edwards’ son who died in a car crash at age 16.

  • Baseball: Red Sox reach deal with Crawford for $142M, 7 yrs

    LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) — A night after Carl Crawford enjoyed a steak dinner with the New York Yankees, he served up a meaty surprise: He's going to play for the rival Boston Red Sox.

    The Red Sox struck again at these winter meetings, reaching agreement with the star left fielder on a $142 million, seven-year contract.

    A person familiar with the talks told The Associated Press late Wednesday the agreement was subject to Crawford passing a physical. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal was not yet finalized.
