  • Griffin tops Luck to win Heisman Trophy

NEW YORK (AP) — Robert Griffin III beat out preseason favorite Andrew Luck for the Heisman Trophy, dazzling voters with his ability to throw, run and lead Big 12 doormat Baylor into the national rankings.
The junior quarterback known as RG3 became the first Heisman winner from Baylor on Saturday night by a comfortable cushion over the Stanford star.
Griffin started the season on the fringe of the Heisman conversation, a talented and exciting player on a marginal team, while Luck was already being touted as a No. 1 NFL draft pick.
Draft day might very well still belong to Luck, but Griffin diverted the Heisman to Waco, Texas, to a school that has never had a player finish better than fourth in the voting — and that was 48 years ago.

  • Advocate: Fine case is serious

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) — New York state must lengthen the statute of limitations to bring charges of child sex abuse, a victims’ advocate said in response to a prosecutor’s statement that it’s too late to investigate two men’s claims that they were molested by former Syracuse University assistant basketball coach Bernie Fine.
Victims of childhood sexual abuse are “denied basic legal rights,” said the Rev. Robert Hoatson of the advocacy group Road to Recovery.
“If there ever was a case that screamed ‘injustice,’ it is this one, since it glaringly displays the further damage that antiquated laws can inflict on victims,” Hoatson said in a statement.

  • Boise State set to join Big East

NEW YORK (AP) — The Big East’s long-awaited additions are set, with more rebuilding to come.

The person spoke Tuesday on condition of anonymity because details were still being worked out with the schools and plans for an announcement were being completed.

  • Luck needs luck to win Heisman in 2011

NEW YORK (AP) — Stanford’s Andrew Luck is returning to New York as a Heisman Trophy finalist, just not as the favorite.
That distinction belongs to Baylor’s Robert Griffin III.
The two star quarterbacks will join fellow finalists Trent Richardson, Tyrann Mathieu and Montee Ball at the Heisman presentation Saturday night in Manhattan.
Luck is the only repeat finalist this season, while Griffin is the first Baylor player to get an invite to the ceremony. The school that never has had a player finish better than fourth in the Heisman voting now seems to have the front-runner.
