  • Venus joins Serena on tourney sidelines

    PARIS (AP) — Used to be that Venus Williams was the one who was highly ranked, the one considered a title contender, the one who would dominate foes so thoroughly that matches would be tidily wrapped up in an hour.
    Now 31, and figuring out from day to day how to handle an illness that saps her strength, Williams was on the wrong end of a lopsided 60-minute defeat in the second round of the French Open Wednesday.
    Looking glum and lacking the verve that carried her to seven Grand Slam titles in her career, Williams barely put up any resistance and lost 6-2, 6-3 to No. 3-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland at Roland Garros.

    PARIS (AP) — For more than a decade, whatever the state of her health or her game, no matter the opponent or arena, Serena Williams always won first-round matches at Grand Slam tournaments.
    Always.
    Until Tuesday at the French Open. Until Williams came within two points of victory nine times, yet remarkably failed to close the deal against unheralded and 111th-ranked Virginie Razzano of France.

  • Rodman found guilty of contempt

    ORANGE, Calif. (AP) — Former NBA star Dennis Rodman might soon find himself working with at-risk teens or cleaning up streets.
    The flamboyant former player known for his rebounding skills and wild, off-court behavior was sentenced Tuesday to 104 hours of community service after being found guilty last year of four counts of contempt for failing to pay child support.
    The ruling also placed Rodman, 51, on three years of informal probation on the condition he keep up his child and spousal support payments.
    It was the latest development in a series of legal disputes that began in 2004, when Rodman’s wife at the time filed for divorce.

  • 76ers force Game 7 in Eastern semifinal

    PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The buzz at the start was for Allen Iverson’s ceremonial return.
    By the end, more than 20,000 fans were on their feet and going wild for Jrue Holiday, Elton Brand, Andre Iguodala and the rugged-and-determined play that kept the eighth-seeded Philadelphia 76ers alive for at least one more game.
    Yes, the Sixers are talking about Game 7 — and they’re taking this improbable postseason run back to Boston.
    Holiday scored 20 points, and Brand had 13 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Sixers to an 82-75 victory over the Celtics on Wednesday night that tied the Eastern Conference semifinals.

    BALTIMORE (AP) — I'll Have Another did just that, winning another Triple Crown race with even more flash and dash than he did in the Kentucky Derby.

    By bolting past Bodemeister — again — this time in Saturday's Preakness, all that stands in the way of racing glory is the Belmont Stakes in three weeks.

    Win that and the smooth-striding 3-year-old will find himself in the company of Secretariat, Seattle Slew and Affirmed, the last to win thoroughbred racing's most coveted prize in 1978.

  • Pacers take 2-1 edge over Heat

    INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — LeBron James grabbed a seat on Miami’s bench, lowered his head and stared down at the floor. Way down.
    Roy Hibbert had 19 points and 18 rebounds, George Hill scored 20 and Danny Granger 17 as the Pacers, showing more balance, toughness and togetherness than favored Miami, throttled the malfunctioning Heat 94-75 on Thursday night in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference semifinals.
    Overlooked during the regular season and given little chance to upset the reigning East champions, the Pacers took a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven series.
    Game 4 is Sunday at raucous Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

  • Bodemeister still the favorite at Pimlico

    BALTIMORE (AP) — Just like in the Kentucky Derby, Bodemeister is the favorite in the Preakness.
    This time, Bob Baffert intends to justify the odds.
    Despite finishing second in the Derby, Bodemeister was installed as the 8-5 favorite for Saturday’s second leg of the Triple Crown. The colt, trained by Baffert, set the pace at Churchill Downs before being overtaken in the stretch by I’ll Have Another, who won by 1½ lengths.
    I’ll Have Another is the second-favorite in the Preakness at 5-2.
    Baffert, a five-time Preakness winner, was delighted to receive the No. 7 post in the 11-horse field.

  • Lakers struggling to right the ship

    Kobe Bryant hit his only shot that really mattered, then celebrated by slapping hands with Justin Timberlake. In the closing seconds of a Game 7 playoff win, the stars were aligning in Los Angeles once again, just like old times.
    Except this was a first-round playoff series against a seriously less talented opponent. And these aren’t anything like old times.
    The Lakers used to swagger through the playoffs with an attitude, mostly because Bryant would always seem to find a way to make them win. Now, after a rout at the hands of Oklahma City in Game 1 of the conference semifinals, even Bryant may not have anything left in his bag of tricks to use against the Thunder.
