  • Artist removes halo from Paterno mural

    STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — An artist has removed a halo from a mural of Penn State football coach Joe Paterno amid the school's child sex-abuse scandal.

    Michael Pilato had put a halo over Paterno's image after the beloved coach's death in January, but said he felt he had to remove it Saturday after a report that Paterno, former university president Graham Spanier and others buried allegations of child sex-abuse against ex-assistant Jerry Sandusky. Paterno's family denies the claim.

    Jordan: No way 2012 U.S. hoops team better than ‘Dream Team’

    CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Michael Jordan said there’s no way Kobe Bryant and this year’s USA Olympic basketball team could’ve beaten the 1992 Dream Team.
    Jordan told The Associated Press Thursday that he laughed — “I absolutely laughed” — when hearing Bryant’s comments that the squad training in Las Vegas could take Jordan and company.
    Jordan said there’s “no comparison” which team is better.
    “For him to compare those two teams is not one of the smarter things he ever could have done,” Jordan said prior playing in a celebrity golf tournament in Charlotte.

  • Phelps bows out of 200 butterfly

    OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Eight was enough for Michael Phelps in Beijing.
    The world’s greatest swimmer dropped one of his eight Olympic events on Monday, leaving him with seven at the London Games. That means the 14-time gold medalist won’t equal the record eight golds he won four years ago.
    And Phelps is just fine with that.
    “Four years ago, we were trying to literally do everything,” he told The Associated Press in an interview Monday. “That was what we wanted to do but at this point, it’s let’s go out, let’s have some fun, let’s relax a little bit.”
    Phelps’ coach, Bob Bowman, announced Monday on the final day of the U.S. trials that Phelps was scratching the 200-meter freestyle.

  • Sharapova bounced by Lisicki, 6-4, 6-3

    WIMBLEDON, England (AP) — All at once, there was a frenzy of activity at a wet and windy All England Club early Monday afternoon.
    Top-seeded and 2004 Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova, a big hitter in her own right, was overpowered in a 6-4, 6-3 loss to No. 15 Sabine Lisicki. Four-time title winner Serena Williams was locked in a three-set tussle against a wild-card entry from Kazakhstan who is ranked 65th but is responsible for the only perfect set in women’s professional tennis.
    Defending champion Petra Kvitova was trying to come back after dropping her opening set.

  • Tiger Woods squeaks out a win at Congressional


    BETHESDA, Md. (AP) — Congressional reopened its gates Sunday to thousands of spectators who got what they expected in the AT&T National — another win by Tiger Woods.

    Only this win didn't follow a typical script.

    Caught in a tense duel with Bo Van Pelt on another sweltering day, it looked as though Woods blinked first until Van Pelt matched him with mistakes of his own. Woods closed with a 2-under 69 and won by two shots when Van Pelt finished with his third straight bogey and had to settle for a 71.

  • Bolt upset by Blake in Jamaican 100 finals

      KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) — When the Olympics start, it will be Usain Bolt doing the chasing.

    The World's Fastest Man wasn't even the fastest man in Jamaica on Friday night.

    Instead, that honor was snatched away by Yohan Blake, the man they call "The Beast," who blew away Bolt out of the starting blocks and finished the 100-meter final in 9.75 seconds to upset the world-record holder by 0.11 seconds in the Jamaican Olympic trials.

    How big a shocker? Time will tell. One thing for sure, however, is that the math for the London Olympics has changed dramatically.
