The bar has been set pretty high for the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys cross country team for the balance of the season, so anything that doesn’t meet that standard could be considered a disappointment.
But, with the 2014 season quickly coming to a close, it is promising to be a very exciting end for both the Hilltoppers and their archrivals.
The Hilltoppers and the Albuquerque Academy Chargers squared off in the regular season finale for both schools, the Los Alamos Invitational, Friday at Los Alamos Golf Course.
Los Alamos, fresh off its huge upset win over the Chargers a week earlier at Rio Rancho, was hoping to pull off the same feat Friday. Unfortunately, Academy, which is still probably the team to beat in 5A, got some big performances from its runners near the front of the pack.
Academy’s Jordan Lesansee, who is having a big year, was the top finisher at the invitational and may have been the difference between a win and a loss for his team. Lesansee finished in a time of 16:32, topping runner-up Roy Madrid of Taos by 13 seconds.
His finish gave the Chargers a 44-54 victory over the Hilltoppers, who finished in the runner-up spot.
And, along with Lesansee, Academy’s Cody Bratzler and Carlos C De Baca also cracked the top 10, finishing sixth and ninth.
