  • Ortiz awarded a 2013 roster spot with Lobos

    New Los Alamos Hilltopper head volleyball coach Robin Reynolds was as surprised as anyone when he heard the news.
    Attending a conference at the University of New Mexico, Lobo head coach Jeff Nelson announced that a former Hilltopper would be receiving a roster spot for the next year.
    “The coach announced that Danielle had made it through tryouts,” Reynolds said. “He said that she needed to start coming to practices regularly, because she’s going to be on the team.”
    The player in question was Danielle Ortiz, one of the top defensive players in Class 4A during her career with the Hilltoppers.
    Ortiz, Los Alamos’ standout libero, will join the Lobos as a walk-on for the 2013 season.
    Before she does that, however, she said she’s got a lot to work on, specifically getting back in playing shape.
    “This week I just started and I’m really sore,” Ortiz said. “I started lifting weights and running. I have to keep that up until we start practice. It’s hard work, but it’ll be worth it.”
    Oritz got on UNM’s radar earlier in her career. She played for a club volleyball team that was run partially by members of the Lobo coaching staff.

    Romero, Cruz-Murphy win at Bower Run

    Ted Romero and Dee Cruz-Murphy were the top finishers in the Jerry Bower Memorial 5K Run.
    The Bower Run, which served as a fundraiser for local Alzheimer’s disease charities, was May 11 in Los Alamos.
    Romero was the top male finisher at the race, coming in at 19 minutes, 10 seconds, while Cruz-Murphy finished in a time of 27:54.

    Firecracker 5K registration is open at YMCA

    Registration is open for the Family YMCA of Los Alamos’ Firecracker Fun Run.
    The run is set for 8 a.m. July 4. The race begins at the YMCA’s facility at 1450 Iris Street.
    Top male and female runners will win prizes. All entrants are eligible for door prizes.
    Price for participation is $25, $15 for YMCA members and $10 for entrants age 13 and under.

  • McDowell, Baron are winners at Trail Runs

    Petra McDowell and Erica Baron were the winners of two of the three races at this weekend’s Jemez Mountain Trail Runs.
    The Jemez Mountain Trail Runs were Saturday. The eighth-annual event included a 50-mile race, a 50-kilometer race and a half-marathon.
    McDowell, of Los Alamos, finished the 50K race in 5 hours, 44 minutes to earn the women’s title in that race. She was the only woman to finish the race in under 6-1/2 hours, easily topping Albuquerque’s Aimee Hoyt for the women’s title.
    Baron , another local competitor, was the top-finishing woman in Saturday’s half-marathon.
    Baron easily won the women’s title in that race with her time of 1:50:36. She finished more than 10 minutes ahead of Kay Ulrich, also from Los Alamos, who was the runner-up in that race.

  • Mang named district Player of Year

    The two athletes named as the District 2-4A Players of the Year in baseball and softball came as no surprise to anyone.
    Hilltopper sophomore Jared Mang, who was the team’s top pitcher and hitter, earned the Player of the Year selection in baseball, while Bernalillo’s dominating pitcher Demi Magdalena was named Player of the Year for 2-4A softball.
    The all-district teams were released this morning. Los Alamos’ top players were prominent in both sports, grabbing five baseball first team slots and four softball first team slots.
    For Mang, it was his second consecutive Player of the Year honor. Mang has been starting — and hitting third in the batting order — since his eighth grade year. He was named to the 2-4A first team in 2011 and had a strong case to win the Player of the Year honor that season as well, but his age was likely a factor in the decision to give that year’s award to Ricky Gonzales of Española Valley.
    Also for Los Alamos’ baseball team, Mike Gill earned his fifth consecutive Manager of the Year honor from the district. Gill has led Los Alamos to five straight 2-4A titles, with the Hilltoppers going 11-1 in the district in 2013.

  • Sports camps will get started soon

    The return of summer means the return of summer sports camps around Los Alamos County.
    Just days after the school year ends in the area, two camps will open up, ’Topper Soccer School and the Los Alamos Tennis Clinic.
    Both camps, which are designed for youth of all abilities, begin Monday. Today is the registration deadline for the first session of ’Topper Soccer School.
    Following those camps are football, girls soccer and all-sports camps later this summer.
    The ’Topper Soccer School, one of the most prominent local camps for youth, is split into two sessions. Following the first session, which concludes June 7, a second session is set to start June 17.
    The first session will be at Urban Park and the second session will be in White Rock. All boys and girls ages 3-9 can take part.
    Deadline for the second session is June 10 for those interested in participating.
    The following week marks the Los Alamos Tennis Clinic.
    That camp, which runs from June 10-14, is also for boys and girls between the ages of 6-15. For those between the ages of 6-10, United States Tennis Association QuickStart training methods will be employed.
    Both the tennis clinic and the soccer school are hosted by members of the Los Alamos High School players and the coaching staff of those sports.

  • Cyclist sets new cross-state record

    There is still plenty of work to be done in preparation for the race of her career, but Lisa Dougherty had a nice warm-up recently.
    So nice, in fact, she set a newly-certified cycling record for fastest time riding west-to-east across New Mexico.
    Dougherty, a scientist at Los Alamos National Laboratory, as well as a published author, topped the old record for crossing the state width-wise, completing the trek in 20 hours, 19 minutes. Had Dougherty not been hampered by rutty asphalt after getting through Roswell, she may have had a shot at breaking the men’s record as well, but lost out on that time by about 41 minutes.
    The record was certified late last month by the Ultramarathon Cycling Association, which keeps tabs on such long-distance records.
    Dougherty had guessed the trip, officially all 392.4 miles of it, would take about 24 hours or more to complete, but beat her projected pace handily, even with some unexpected hiccups along the way.
    The state crossing was a tune-up for Dougherty’s ambitious upcoming outing, the Race Across America (RAAM). The race starts June 11 in Oceanside, Calif., and will wind its way to Annapolis, Md., covering 3,000 miles in the span of about 11 days.

    Athletic Night for incoming freshmen students is Tuesday at Los Alamos High School

    Los Alamos High School will host its annual eighth grade athletic night Tuesday. The athletic night will be in the Duane Smith Auditorium starting at 6 p.m.
    General information on sports programs at LAHS will be given, followed by a chance for prospective eighth grade athletes to meet with coaches from the various Hilltopper programs.
    All current eighth graders interested in participating in high school athletics are invited to attend.

    Deadline for soccer camp registration is Tuesday

    The Los Alamos High School boys soccer team is hosting a summer soccer camp for boys and girls ages 3-9.
    The camp has two scheduled sessions, the first from June 3-7 and the second from June 17-21 at Rover Park in White Rock. Registration for the first session is due by Tuesday.
    Price for participation is $35 for one session or $50 for both sessions. More information can be found by visiting laschools.net/athletics or calling Marsha Parker at 672-1558.

  • Rees is top predictor this week

    Dan Rees was the best predictor at this week’s Pace Race by quite a bit.
    The Pace Race, a weekly event hosted by the Atomic City Roadrunners, was Tuesday. The race was held on an old wagon road in the hills overlooking Los Alamos National Laboratory’s S-Site.
    Rees, running on the 3-mile course, was off by just four seconds on his predicted race finish Tuesday. Linda Vance was the next-best predictor, 27 seconds off, while Sue Elkins was the best predictor on the 1-mile course, missing by 42 seconds.
    The fastest finisher on the 1-mile course was Inez Ross, who finished with a time of 16:02. Ted Romero was the fastest finisher on the longer course, coming in at 22:11.
    The next Pace Race will be 6 p.m. Tuesday. The race will begin at the Quemazon Trailhead, just off Trinity Drive and 48th Street. There will be a pavement course available for competitors wanting to bring strollers.
