A pair of Los Alamos-area Young America Football League teams will play in the 2010 Chile Bowl playoffs starting today.

In Division 3, the Los Alamos Outlaws will play the Lobos. That game is also set for St. Michael's High School at 2 p.m.

  • Boys soccer: LA boys looking to make another deep run in playoffs

    1986.
It was an eventful year in the world of sports. The mighty Chicago Bears, who flirted with a 16-0 record in the regular season, won the Super Bowl in a rout. Bill Buckner missed a ground ball to help the New York Mets win the World Series.
In Los Alamos, the year’s biggest significance might be the state tournament victory by the Hilltopper boys soccer team, which knocked off Eldorado 2-0 in the finale to grab its one and only state title.

  • Girls soccer: Topper girls have good draw, mojo after big wins

The bad news the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls soccer team was given Sunday was quickly tempered with much better news.
Los Alamos was more than a little bummed that its two big wins in the final two games of its regular season didn’t seem to count for much when the seeding for the Class AAAA state tournament was announced. Instead of their two wins over St. Michael’s and Aztec in the final two days of the regular season boosting their stock, the Hilltoppers fell into pretty much the exact same spot they were projected to go into prior to the two wins.

  • Football: LA hosts season finale tonight

Los Alamos closes out its regular season with a District 2AAAA contest tonight at home. The Hilltoppers will host the Capital Jaguars at 7 p.m.

A win coupled with a favorable outcome between Santa Fe and Bernalillo — those two teams play tonight — could give the Hilltoppers the district title this season. Should Santa Fe prevail at home against Bernalillo by a margin of between 2-7 points, the Hilltoppers will win the district title on the point-differential tiebreaker.

  • Volleyball: Toppers finish off regular season with 3-1 win at home

On Senior Night at Griffith Gymnasium, a junior jump-started the Los Alamos Hilltopper volleyball team’s effort to finish off the 2010 District 2AAAA season undefeated.
Hilltopper Chase Ealey had six spike kills in the first set of Wednesday’s match as Los Alamos finished off its regular season with a 3-1 victory over the Capital Jaguars.
Los Alamos, which had posted five straight shutout victories heading into the final two matches of the season, dropped sets against both Española Valley Saturday and the Jaguars Wednesday.

  • Cross country: LA primed to grab two big wins at 2AAAA title races

The only question concerning the outcome of the 2010 District 2AAAA cross country championships is not who will win, but by how much.
Both the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys and girls cross country teams are the favorites to win in Friday’s district meet, which will be run at Santa Fe’s Municipal Recreation Center just off N.M. 599.
As usual, the Hilltoppers are King Kong-sized favorites heading into the race.

  • Cross country: Barranca Mesa, Chamisa win team competition at Mile Run

The girls team from Barranca Mesa finished with a near-perfect score at Friday’s Elementary School Mile Run.
The run is held annually in conjunction with the Los Alamos Invitational cross country meet. Any elementary school student is eligible to compete in the run.
Zoe Challacombe, a sixth-grader at Barranca Mesa, led a group of sixth graders from her school to the near-perfect finish. Only Aspen’s Maria Sandoval broke up the perfect score bid in the race, edging out Kenidee Hatler, Barranca’s fifth runner.

  • Soccer: Neal, Thoma and Delano earn honors in district

Los Alamos Hilltopper soccer players took three of the top four individual honors in District 2AAAA this season.
Hilltoppers Andy Thoma and Amy Neal were named the Offensive Players of the Year in district soccer for the 2010 season, as announced by the district Tuesday.
Meanwhile, 2009 District Player of the Year, Graham Delano, once again was given one of the district’s top honors, taking Defensive Player of the Year.

  • Soccer: LA girls take on Broncos in 1st round

While the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls soccer team fell in about where it expected to in the Class AAAA state tournament bracket, the fates of some other teams turned out to be a bit different.
Los Alamos was awarded the sixth seed in the Class AAAA championship bracket, which was released Sunday. The AAAA state tournament gets going Friday and continues through Nov. 6 with the state title game.
