  • Football: QB Kory Balog named Offensive Player of Year

    Kory Balog was named Offensive Player of the Year by the members of District 2AAAA for the 2010 football season.
    Balog, a senior for the Los Alamos Hilltopper football team, was among the top rushers and passers in his senior season from the quarterback spot. Under new head coach Garett Williams, Balog led the team to a runner-up finish in 2AAAA this season.
    Los Alamos finished with a record of 4-6 overall and 3-1 in the district, finishing one game behind Bernalillo, which posted a perfect 4-0 district record.

  • Volleyball: Toppers swept in state 4A semifinal

    RIO RANCHO — For the third year in a row, the Los Alamos Hilltopper volleyball team ends its season with a loss to the St. Pius X Sartans.
    After surviving a back-and-forth contest Friday morning against the Roswell Coyotes in the Class AAAA quarterfinals, the Hilltoppers took the Sartans down to the wire in each of the first two sets in Friday night’s semifinal.

  • LA to open NMIIHL play at home tonight vs. Ice Tigers

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper hockey team will open its 2010-11 season tonight when it hosts the Taos Ice Tigers.
    Los Alamos, which plays in the New Mexico Interscholastic Ice Hockey League, will take on the Tigers starting at 8 p.m.
    Also, the Hilltoppers will play Saturday against the Eldorado Eagles. That game is set for 10 a.m.
    The Hilltoppers are the defending NMIIHL pure team champion. Teams in NMIIHL can be “pure,” representatives of one school, or “composite,” comprised of teams from more than one school.

  • Hilger paces Atomic Tumblers at season opening competition

    The Los Alamos Atomic Tumblers gymnastics team opened its season at home Oct. 23 hosting four other teams.
    The meet consisted of gymnasts in levels 3-6. In all, 82 gymnasts participated in the meet, which was held at the Los Alamos School of Gymnastics on North Mesa.
    The meet marked the opening of the 2010-11 compulsory season.
    Los Alamos’ Alyssa Hilger, a level 4 gymnast, earned the top mark of the meet. She recorded a score of 36.20 to win the 10-year-old division.

  • LA takes Pool D win Thursday

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper volleyball team earned a victory in Pool D play Thursday and moved on to today’s quarterfinal round.
    The Class AAAA state tournament opened Thursday with pool play. Direct elimination play continued today with the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds, with the state championship match scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday.
    Los Alamos, the No. 4 seed in the AAAA tournament, got through the pool, which included both fifth-seeded Piedra Vista and 12th-seeded Aztec. The victory in Pool D gave Los Alamos a bid into the state quarterfinals.

  • Men's basketball: Aggies open season Friday

    LAS CRUCES — The New Mexico State men’s basketball team opens the 2010-11 season at Louisiana Friday.
    Friday’s game is scheduled for 6 p.m. in Lafayette.
    This is the second consecutive season and third time in four years that the Aggies have started on the road.

  • Volleyball: Pojoaque wins pool, advances to quarterfinals

    The Pojoaque Elks volleyball team emerged as the top team out of the Class AAA pool play Thursday morning.

    The Elks, the defending Class AAA champions and the No. 1-seeded team in the tournament, topped Silver and Las Vegas Robertson in pool play Thursday morning. The Elks advance to play the winner between Ruidoso and Shiprock Friday morning.

    The Class AAA tournament is being played at the Star Center in Rio Rancho.

    Other pool winners in that tournament include St. Michael's, Portales and Hatch Valley.

  • Volleyball: Toppers on a roll heading into Thursday’s pool play

    Garry Maskaly thought his team would do a little better in the pool play round of the 2009 state Class AAAA volleyball tournament.
    At first, Maskaly wondered why his team was struggling with two teams it shouldn’t have had nearly as much trouble with as it did. The next day, the answer became clear.

  • Volleyball: LA gets No. 4 seed in playoffs

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper volleyball team is the top seed in Pool D for the 2010 state playoffs.
    The state Class AAAA playoffs will start Thursday at the Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho.
    Los Alamos, the District 2AAAA champion, earned a No. 4 overall seed in the state tournament, which gets going with the pool play round Thursday. In its pool, it will face fifth-seeded Piedra Vista and 12th-seeded Aztec.

  • Football: Toppers left out of bracket

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper football team’s push in the last three games of the regular season didn’t seem to impress the New Mexico Activities Association.
    The Hilltoppers were left out of the postseason draw in Class AAAA for 2010. The NMAA released the state playoff brackets this weekend.
