  • Soccer: LA girls take on Broncos in 1st round

While the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls soccer team fell in about where it expected to in the Class AAAA state tournament bracket, the fates of some other teams turned out to be a bit different.
Los Alamos was awarded the sixth seed in the Class AAAA championship bracket, which was released Sunday. The AAAA state tournament gets going Friday and continues through Nov. 6 with the state title game.

  • Soccer: LA boys get 5th seed in playoffs

It was a crowded door to try to get through and the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys soccer team was just crowded out.
Los Alamos picked up a fifth seed in the upcoming state soccer playoffs. The bracket for the Class AAAA tournament was released Sunday.
The No. 5 seed means the Hilltoppers (13-8) just missed out on one of the coveted top four bracket spots that as many seven teams could legitimately lay claim to this season.
Instead, Los Alamos will play an opening round game Saturday. That game is set for 1 p.m. at Sullivan Field.

  • Soccer: LA boys get fifth seed, girls sixth seed in 4A tournament

Both the Los Alamos boys and girls soccer teams will host first round games this weekend to start the Class AAAA playoffs.

The state Class AAAA tournament will start Friday and continue through next weekend.

Los Alamos’ boys earned the No. 5 seed in the tournament and will host 12th-seeded Los Lunas in the opening round of the tournament. Meanwhile, Los Alamos’ girls picked up a No. 6 seed and will meet No. 11 Kirtland Central in the first round.

  • Girls cross country: LA sticks together, picks up big home victory

Calling it a buzzword might be something of a misnomer, but it was the word floating around most among the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls cross country team Friday.
    Faith.
And on the odd chance that there were any doubters among them, that doubt was erased in a matter of about 15 seconds at the Los Alamos Invitational.
At the meet, traditionally the last of the regular season for Los Alamos, all six of the Hilltoppers’ competing runners crossed the finish line in order, from four through nine, to earn a big victory.

  • Boys cross country: Toppers have solid finish, gain ground on Academy

In 2003 when the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys cross country team upset heavily-favored Albuquerque Academy for the state Class AAAA title, it had its best showing of the regular season at the Los Alamos Invitational.
In 2007 when the Hilltoppers upset the heavily-favored Academy Chargers for the state Class AAAA title, they had their best showing of the season at the Los Alamos Invitational.
Could the 2010 Los Alamos Invitational be a harbinger of things to come?

  • Football: LA wins big in the Valley, 51-12

ESPAÑOLA – The Los Alamos Hilltopper football team did what it had to do in defeating the Española Valley Sundevils Friday night.
Now, it must finish off its 2010 season with a victory and hope for a favorable outcome from the Bernalillo-Santa Fe game this week.
The Hilltoppers vanquished the Sundevils, who have struggled through the entire 2010 season. The Hilltoppers scored with just 17 seconds expired in the game Friday night and never looked back, picking up a 51-12 victory at Española Valley.

  • Girls soccer: Toppers pick up shootout victory

How the Class AAAA girls soccer state tree will finally shake out is almost anyone’s guess at this point, but the Los Alamos Hilltoppers made as good of a closing argument as they could.
The Hilltoppers picked up two big wins in consecutive nights at home to end their 2010 regular season. Friday, they topped St. Michael’s in an overtime battle, 2-1, then earned a shootout win Saturday over the Aztec Tigers, also by a final of 2-1.

  • Soccer: Postseason brackets due out today

Brackets for the New Mexico Activities Association soccer postseason are scheduled to be released today.
Both the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys and girls soccer teams have already clinched postseason berths, via their district titles this season.
The Class AAAA postseason will begin Friday with first round matchups. Class AAAA quarterfinals for both boys and girls are scheduled for the morning of Nov. 4 at the Albuquerque Public Schools Soccer Complex near Volcano Vista High School.
