  • Sports update 03-08-11

    Isotopes ticket sales, National Anthem tryouts are March 12

    Albuquerque Isotopes’ single game tickets for the 2011 regular season, as well as the Triple-A championship game, will go on sale March 12.
    Along with the start of single game ticket sales, the Isotopes will host their annual open house, Select-A-Seat promotion and auditions to sing the National Anthem.
    Isotopes Park opens at 10 a.m. that day.

  • Snow-ball

    Baseball season has started in Los Alamos, which means it’s time for snow. Hilltopper manager Mike Gill (center) and first base coach Jeff Walterscheid check out the accumulation from Monday afternoon’s storm, which nixed the scheduled game at Bomber Field against Pojoaque. No make-up date has been announced.

  • Baseball/Softball: LA teams earn votes in first Class 4A poll

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper baseball and softball teams both garnered votes in the first Class 4A coaches’ polls of the season.
    The coaches’ polls are conducted by the New Mexico High School Coaches Association. Members from all across the state cast ballots for the top 10 teams in the state.
    Los Alamos’ baseball team finished with two votes in the first poll, which was released late last week. That vote put Los Alamos unofficially 14th in the state.

  • Track and field: LA girls open 2011 with win Saturday

    ALBUQUERQUE — In its quest for a third straight Class 4A championship, the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls track and field team got its season started on the right foot.
    The Hilltopper girls picked up a victory in their season-opening meet, the Albuquerque Academy Chile Quad, scoring 98 points to hold off a stiff charge from the St. Pius X Sartans Saturday at Richard Harper Memorial Field.
    Also Saturday, Los Alamos’ boys team finished a strong second at the meet, earning 96 points. The Academy Chargers grabbed 118 team points to earn that team victory.

  • Girls basketball: LA bounced by Grants in first round

    GRANTS — A quick-strike rally by the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls basketball team at the end of the first half Friday put it within striking distance of the Grants Pirates heading into the break.

    Los Alamos trailed by as many as eight points in the first half of the opening round Class 4A state tournament game against Grants, but cut the Pirates’ lead down to just one possession.

    That would, however, be the last offensive push the Hilltoppers would make for the balance of the ballgame.

  • Grants bests Los Alamos in first round contest; scores from around the state

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper girls basketball team was defeated in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs Friday night in Grants. The Pirates took down the No. 12 seed Hilltoppers 46-28.

  • Sports Update 03-04-11

    Girls hoops game to be broadcast on KRSN

    The Los Alamos-Grants girls basketball game, which is scheduled for 6 p.m., will be broadcast live on KRSN AM 1490.
    Gene Mortensen, the “Voice of the Hilltoppers,” will call the action live from Grants. The game is the opening round contest of the Class 4A state tournament.
    The game will also be streamed live on the Internet at the station’s website, krsnam1490.com.

  • Tennis: LA looks to get back to form

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper tennis teams are participating in their second event of the season this weekend.
    Los Alamos’ boys and girls are taking part in the Bosque Invitational in Albuquerque. The two-day event will continue through Saturday.
    Both Hilltopper teams will have to find replacements for some of their top players that were lost to graduation in 2010.
