  • Boys basketball: LA falls at Moriarty

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys basketball team couldn’t slow down the Moriarty Pintos in the second half Tuesday, allowing the Pintos to score a come-from-behind victory.
    Moriarty managed to push the ball into the lane and pick up fouls in the second half Tuesday as it knocked off Los Alamos 48-41 in Moriarty.
    The loss dropped the Hilltoppers to 0-3 on the young season. More importantly, the loss was the third of the season by the Hilltoppers to a Class AAAA opponent.

  • Swimmng and diving: LA’s teams to host home opener this weekend

    Heading into their home opening meet, the Los Alamos Hilltopper swimming and diving teams feel good about their chances to win it.
    But the Hilltoppers are told many times throughout the season that it’s all about how they finish.
    Los Alamos’ boys and girls teams will be at home Friday and Saturday for the Los Alamos Invitational. The meet, which will take place at the Larry R. Walkup Aquatic Center, will hold diving competition at 5 p.m. Friday, then will have swimming competition starting 10 a.m. Saturday.

  • Gymnastics: Hilger grabs second overall top finish at Los Lunas meet

    For the second straight time, the Los Alamos School of Gymnastics’ Alyssa Hilger was the high all-around point-getter.
    The LASG Atomic Tumblers competed in the Wild Horse Invitational Nov. 20-21, held in Los Lunas. In all, 12 teams and 180 gymnasts took part in the event.
    Hilger, who was the top overall finisher at the Trick or Treat Meet in Santa Fe last month, duplicated that feat in Los Lunas. Hilger scored a 36.45 in the level 4, 10-year-old division.

  • Boys basketball: 'Toppers lose home opener Saturday

    Since taking over the head coaching job for the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys basketball program, Matt King has made no bones that his team will be a work-in-progress during the 2010-11 season.
    And now, two games into the season, he is fully aware of where the most work needs to take place.
    In their home opener of the season, and the first home game in King’s coaching stint at Los Alamos, the Hilltoppers turned the ball over 28 times, including losing the ball 17 times in the second and third quarters.

  • Girls basketball: Elks top LA with late scores

    While there are some questions surrounding the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls basketball team heading into the 2010-11 season, the Hilltoppers showed they might have some answers soon.
    Friday night in their season debut, the Hilltoppers looked like they might pull out a big win against a very tough opponent the Pojoaque Elks. Instead, however, the Elks rallied from a late 6-pont deficit to earn a 53-51 victory.
    Los Alamos opened its 2010-11 campaign Friday night at Griffith Gymnasium.

  • Soccer: Thoma named Class AAAA Player of the Year, Gartz earns Coach of the Year honors in AAAA

    Following a year capped by one of the biggest performances in the history of Los Alamos Hilltopper boys soccer, it was fitting the two biggest individual honors of the season went to members of the Hilltopper program.
    Los Alamos, the 2010 state Class AAAA champion, had its top player and head coach named the best of the year by coaches statewide.

  • Running: Romero is tops at Turkey Trot

    Ted Romero was the big winner at the 2010 Turkey Trot.
    The Turkey Trot, which was held Sunday on North Mesa, was hosted jointly by the Atomic City Roadrunners, CROP and LA Cares. The event was to benefit those in need of food assistance in the area.
    Sunday’s run included 195 runners taking place on a 2.57-mile course.
    Romero finished the race in 16 minutes, 47 seconds, outpacing runner-up Dan Reese by 45 seconds. Vicky Saga finished third in the race.

  • Girls basketball: 'Toppers open season at home Friday

    The 2010-11 version of the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls basketball team will no doubt be a rebuilding project.
    The big question going into the season is how big of a project will it be?
    The Hilltoppers and their largely new-look roster will premier at home Friday night. They will take on the always-tough Pojoaque Elks at 7 p.m.
    Los Alamos has just three returning players from last season, all three of them reserves, as well as four underclassmen on its opening day roster.

  • Swimming and diving: LA girls finish second, boys third at preseason contest

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys and girls swimming and diving teams both took part in the preseason Barney Relays Saturday, with the girls finishing second and the boys third in team standings.
    The Barney Relays, hosted by Albuquerque Academy, is an annual event with some of the top teams in the state from the previous season invited. Schools form relay teams in each race instead of swimming in individual competition.
