  • Wrestling: Geyer places fourth for LA at state tournament

    RIO RANCHO — It was a big weekend for the Geyer family.
    Older brother Cory Geyer and younger brother Brian were the final two members of the Los Alamos Hilltopper wrestling team still alive heading into Saturday’s second round of the Class 4A championship tournament.
    The tournament was held at the Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho.

  • Boys basketball: Toppers fall to Jags in finale

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys basketball team made a push in the fourth quarter to get back into the ballgame, but fell short Wednesday night.
    In its 2010-11 regular season finale, Los Alamos lost to the Capital Jaguars 47-39 at Griffith Gymnasium. Los Alamos finishes the regular season in fourth place in the District 2AAAA standings and will play in the opening round district tournament game Monday.
    The Hilltoppers finish the season with a record of 6-19 and were 2-6 in District 2AAAA play.

  • Wrestling: Toppers taking six to state Class 4A tourney this season

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper wrestling team will take six members to the state Class 4A championship meet this weekend, with one wrestler having a fair chance at grabbing a coveted top six seed.
    The New Mexico Activities Association will host its state tournament Friday and Saturday at the Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho. Friday’s opening round is set for 10 a.m.
    With six wrestlers qualified, it’s highly unlikely the Hilltoppers will be a factor in the team standings. Their focus heading in is on individual performance.

  • Swimming and diving: LA boys, girls take part in state meet starting Friday

    The state swimming and diving championship meet gets rolling Friday morning and both Los Alamos Hilltopper teams will be represented.
    Los Alamos has 24 entries scheduled to compete on the girls side this weekend and 12 more on the boys side.
    The state championship meet will start Friday morning and continues through Saturday. The meet will once again be hosted by the Albuquerque Academy Chargers.
    Preliminary diving competition starts at 8:30 a.m. Friday and swimming prelims will start at 3 p.m. Friday.

  • Girls basketball: Toppers win big in final 2-4A game vs. Jags

    SANTA FE — A 9-0 run spanning nearly four minutes set the tone early for the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls basketball team Tuesday.
    In its final regular season District 2AAAA contest, the Hilltoppers held the Capital Jaguars to just two points in the opening quarter and just four in the final quarter to win going away, 52-28 at Edward Ortiz Gymnasium.
    Los Alamos never trailed in the game, scoring early and often in the first quarter while confounding the Capital offense for most of the contest.

  • Hockey: 'Toppers close out season with wins

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper ice hockey team grabbed victories in its final regular season outings this weekend.
    The Hilltoppers routed the Santa Fe Blue Jackets 8-1 Friday night in Santa Fe, then topped the La Cueva Bears at home Sunday, taking a 7-5 decision.
    Against the Blue Jackets, Los Alamos broke open a 1-0 game after one period, scoring three times in the second period and four more in the third. Santa Fe’s lone goal of the game came on a power play chance with 4:19 remaining.

  • Swimming and diving: LA girls win district title, boys are second

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper girls swimming and diving team won the District 1 championship in a big way Saturday.
    The Hilltopper girls finished with 411.50 points at Saturday’s meet in Santa Fe. They outdistanced district runner-up Santa Fe (336 points), the only team that finished within 100 points.
    Additionally, the Hilltoppers were able to qualify four different individuals at Saturday’s meet. The top two finishers in each event, regardless of time, advance to the state meet, which will start Friday in Albuquerque.

    Boys basketball: LAMS at Española, seventh grade, 4 p.m.; eighth grade, 5 p.m.

    Friday
    Wrestling: Class 4A state championship tournament, 10 a.m.

    Diving: State championship meet, 8:30 a.m.

  • Boys basketball: LA topped Friday at Española Valley

    ESPAÑOLA — Despite facing the District 2AAAA heavyweight champ Friday, the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys basketball team survived several knockout attempts.
    Los Alamos managed to hang with the Española Valley Sundevils, the now five-time defending district champions, throughout Friday’s contest at Edward Medina Gymnasium. But the Sundevils, who again are on the short list to contend for a Class 4A title this season, led the game from wire-to-wire top earn a 58-45 victory.

  • Girls basketball: Toppers fall at home Saturday

    While the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls basketball team did a good job in slowing down one of District 2AAAA’s premier players, it wasn’t enough to pull off the upset Saturday night.
    Los Alamos kept Española Valley’s Justine Vigil from taking over Saturday’s ballgame the way she had the first time the two teams met, but the Española Valley’s Sundevils’ potent offense still proved to be too tough.
