  • Grants bests Los Alamos in first round contest; scores from around the state

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper girls basketball team was defeated in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs Friday night in Grants. The Pirates took down the No. 12 seed Hilltoppers 46-28.

  • Sports Update 03-04-11

    Girls hoops game to be broadcast on KRSN

    The Los Alamos-Grants girls basketball game, which is scheduled for 6 p.m., will be broadcast live on KRSN AM 1490.
    Gene Mortensen, the “Voice of the Hilltoppers,” will call the action live from Grants. The game is the opening round contest of the Class 4A state tournament.
    The game will also be streamed live on the Internet at the station’s website, krsnam1490.com.

  • Tennis: LA looks to get back to form

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper tennis teams are participating in their second event of the season this weekend.
    Los Alamos’ boys and girls are taking part in the Bosque Invitational in Albuquerque. The two-day event will continue through Saturday.
    Both Hilltopper teams will have to find replacements for some of their top players that were lost to graduation in 2010.

  • Girls basketball: LA travels to Grants for first round of playoffs

    Last year, the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls basketball team was a No. 5 seed trying to stave off an upset bid against a No. 12 seed.

    In 2011, the Hilltoppers will play the role of spoiler in that same scenario.

    Los Alamos (13-14) earned an at-large nod into the 2011 state Class 4A playoffs. It will travel to Grants to take on a formidable foe. Tip-off time is scheduled for 6 p.m.

    The Class 4A playoffs open Friday and continue through March 12 when the new champs will be crowned at The Pit in Albuquerque.

  • Hockey: LA places third at tourney, Taos wins

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper hockey team finished third at the Year-End Tournament in Taos this weekend.
    Los Alamos, the No. 2 seed in the tournament and the defending state champion, dropped its second round game in overtime and had to battle its way back through the losers’ bracket before again falling to the host Taos Tigers.

  • Baseball: Toppers fall at home to Tigers, 13-3

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper baseball team lost its third game to open the 2011 season Tuesday at Bomber Field.
    Los Alamos gave up seven runs in a costly second inning in its home opener Tuesday, falling to the Class 4A Los Lunas Tigers 13-3 in five innings.
    The Hilltoppers were held scoreless through their first five at-bats against Los Lunas, with Tiger pitcher Pat Martinez keeping their lineup off-balance. The Hilltoppers’ only damage at the plate against Martinez came in their final at-bat, trying to stave off an early exit.

  • Swimming: Aquatomics' results from High Altitude Invite

  • Basketball: LA girls nab No. 12 spot, boys are out

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper girls basketball team earned a No. 12 seed for the 2011 Class 4A state playoffs.
    Los Alamos will travel to Grants Friday night for the first round of the state tournament, where it will meet the fifth-seeded Grants Pirates.
    The match-ups for the state tournament were released Sunday night by the New Mexico Activities Association. The tournament continues through March 12 when the state champions are determined.

  • Basketball: LA girls get No. 12 seed in tourney

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper girls basketball team will face the Grants Pirates in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs.

    Los Alamos, which finished second in the District 2AAAA tournament to Espanola Valley Saturday night, earned a 12 seed into the playoffs.

    The Class 4A playoffs start this weekend. Los Alamos and fifth-seeded Grants are scheduled to face off Friday night. Tip-off time had yet to be announced.

    Los Alamos' boys were not selected for an at-large bid this season. Los Alamos finished fourth in the 2AAAA tournament.
