  • LA’s USTA team headed to sectionals

    The Los Alamos ladies’ senior tennis team won a pair of playoff matches over the weekend to put them into the Southwest Sectionals.
    Los Alamos won the Northern New Mexico District playoffs in the seniors’ United States Tennis Association 3.5 division. Los Alamos knocked off both Tanoan Country Club of Albuquerque Saturday afternoon and Sangre de Cristo of Santa Fe Sunday.
    In both of the weekend contests, which were held at Urban Park, Los Alamos took the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to win the best-of-three playoffs, both by counts of 2-1.

  • Wrestling: Hilltoppers struggle at Jaguar Invite

    SANTA FE – It comes as little surprise to the Los Alamos Hilltopper wrestling team that there’s still plenty of work to do.
    Fortunately, there is still time to get where it wants to be come mid-February.
    Los Alamos’ wrestlers mostly took it on the chin at Friday’s Jaguar Invitational, hosted by one of the Hilltoppers’ district rivals, Capital High School. Los Alamos fell in five of its six first round contests and had just one grappler still alive in the championship bracket after round two.

  • Basketball: LA boys, girls finish eighth at Vigil Invite

    Both the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys and girls basketball teams went 0-3 in the Joe Armijo Invitational tournament this weekend, placing them eighth in the eight-team brackets.
    Following opening round losses Thursday, neither team could bounce back to pick up a victory in the very tough tournament, which is hosted annually by Albuquerque Academy. The tournament is so tough, in fact, that the No. 1 Class AAAA team in the state, Española Valley, was Los Alamos’ opponent in the seventh-place game Saturday after losing to both Denver Mullen and Hope Christian.

  • Hockey: Costello scores 5 as LA drops Santa Fe

    Jade Costello is quickly getting a reputation as the go-to closer of the Los Alamos Hilltopper hockey team.
    Los Alamos took on the Santa Fe Blue Jackets Friday night at Los Alamos County Ice Rink. In that contest, won 5-1 by Los Alamos, the Hilltoppers found lots of scoring opportunities and Costello, a newcomer, finished them off.
    Costello posted his second 5-goal performance of the season Friday, coming in back-to-back contests. Costello posted five goals the previous weekend against previously unbeaten Taos.

  • ´Toppers fall by 16 to Volcano Vista

    ALBUQUERQUE — Following a big second quarter, the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls basketball team looked like it had all the momentum heading into the second half Thursday.
    Emma Fenske, however, was right there to take it back.
    Los Alamos fell into a big hole to start off its game against the Volcano Vista Hawks Thursday, but played excellent defense and ran the press breaker to near perfection in the second quarter to get right back into the ballgame.

  • LA gets thumped in opening round by Highland

    ALBUQUERQUE — It was a decisive victory by the Highland Hornets, to say the least.
    Highland, one of the granddaddy schools in Albuquerque, made light work of the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys basketball team Thursday.
    Los Alamos, playing in the first round of the Joe Armijo Invitational, knew it was going to be an uphill battle against Highland. Highland did not disappoint.

  • Hockey: Toppers have three games scheduled for this weekend

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper hockey team has a full weekend ahead of it in New Mexico Interscholastic Ice Hockey League play.
    The Hilltoppers will play three contests in wo days starting Friday when they host the Santa Fe Blue Jackets. Friday’s game against the Blue Jackets is set for 7 p.m. at Los Alamos County Ice Rink.
    Saturday, the Hilltoppers will play the St. Pius X Sartans at 10 a.m., then take on Rio Rancho at 4:15 p.m.

  • Basketball: LA teams head to tough tourney at Academy

    Both the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys and girls basketball teams will be facing stiff competition this week when they travel to one of the premier tournaments in the state.
    The teams will take part in the Joe Armijo Invitational, which starts Thursday and continues through Saturday at Albuquerque Academy.

  • Boys basketball: Topper boys pick up win

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys basketball team earned its first victory of the season and the first victory of head coach Matt King’s career by outlasting the Belen Eagles.
    The Hilltoppers did a lot of good things Tuesday night to make up for their struggling shooting as they knocked off the Eagles on the road 35-29. The Hilltoppers had their best team defensive effort of the season and did well on the boards to limit the Eagles’ offensive chances.
