  • Girls basketball: Hilltoppers knock off Eagles at home

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper girls basketball team put together its most dominant performance of the season Tuesday in topping Belen.
    Los Alamos held Belen to just 17 points in the first half at home Tuesday. Meanwhile, Hilltopper Erin Kirk turned in a double-double performance with 11 points and 13 rebounds as Los Alamos knocked off Belen’s Eagles 60-46 at Griffith Gymnasium.

  • Boys basketball: LA dropped by St. Pius X on road, 46-27

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys basketball team fell in an important game against one of its chief rivals Tuesday night.
    Los Alamos faced off against former District 2AAAA foe St. Pius X in a big Class 4A contest, but wound up on the short end of a 46-27 decision at St. Sebastian Gymnasium.
    The loss was the third straight and fourth in the last five contests for the Hilltoppers (4-12), who have been held to under 40 points for each of the four losses on the current slide.

  • Hockey: Toppers go win, loss, tie at tourney

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper hockey team went 1-1-1 in three contests at this weekend’s Mid-Season tournament.
    The tournament, a series of exhibition game involving all 10 teams in the New Mexico Interscholastic Ice Hockey League, was held Friday, Saturday and Sunday in Taos.
    The Hilltoppers, in second place in the NMIIHL standings, dropped their tournament opener to the Cibola Cougars Saturday, 3-1.

  • Wrestling: Geyer named to All-Tourney team

    Los Alamos wrestler Brian Geyer was named to the All-Tournament Team at this weekend’s Moriarty Pinto Duals.
    Geyer, competing in the 160-pound weight class, won all five of his bouts at Saturday’s Pinto Duals, the only wrestler from Los Alamos to go undefeated at the tournament.
    The Hilltoppers finished seventh in the 10-team tournament, which was won by Rio Grande. Geyer was the only Hilltopper picked for the All-Tournament Team.

  • Girls basketball: Toppers upend Sartans Friday night

    ALBUQUERQUE — While “must-win” might have been too strong of a moniker, the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls basketball team knew Friday night’s contest was a “probably should win.”
    And the team responded.
    Facing a tough challenger on the road, Los Alamos earned a big victory over the St. Pius X Sartans.
    It was the second of three tough games the Hilltoppers played this week. They lost Tuesday to Class 5A Volcano Vista on the road, then lost to a very good Class 5A team in Sandia Saturday night, 52-33 at home.

  • Swim teams earn victories at home

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys and girls swimming and diving teams cruised to victory over their two opponents Saturday.
    With just the three competing teams in attendance, Los Alamos’ girls racked up point to hold off Taos, while in the boys competition, Los Alamos grabbed 513 points, easily topping runner-up Hope Christian.

  • LA wrestlers win one of five duals

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper wrestling team took one victory in five duals matches at the Moriarty Invitational Saturday.
    Los Alamos, wrestling for the first time in nearly a month, got off to a slow start at the Moriarty dual meet, hosted by the Pintos, one of the top Class 4A teams in the state. However, Los Alamos regrouped quickly to pick up a win over Sandia in its second contest of the day.
    The Hilltoppers topped Sandia’s Matadors by a final of 39-30. They would lose to Del Norte 31-18, Moriarty 60-18, Las Vegas Robertson 51-12 and Santa Fe 37-24.

    Girls hoops game rescheduled for Feb. 19

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper girls basketball team has rescheduled its away game with Piedra Vista, Los Alamos High School’s athletic office announced Tuesday.
    The game, originally scheduled for Dec. 17, will be played Feb. 19. The game was postponed by a snowstorm.
    Game times are set for 11 a.m. for the C team, 12:30 p.m. for the junior varsity and 2 p.m. for the varsity.

  • Hockey: LA starts tourney Saturday

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper hockey team has three games scheduled in the upcoming Taos Mid-Season Tournament.
    The tournament, which starts Friday in Taos, includes all 10 teams from the New Mexico Interscholastic Ice Hockey League.
    Los Alamos, which is currently second in league standings, has a pair of games scheduled Saturday and a third Sunday.
    It will take on Cibola bright and early Saturday — game time is set for 7:15 a.m. — then face Albuquerque’s Outkast at 1:45 p.m. Sunday’s game against La Cueva is set for 11:30 a.m.
