  • ´Toppers upend Spartans

What was shaping up to be a classic district battle between Nos. 1 and 2 heading in fizzled out quickly Saturday night at Griffith Gymnasium.
In a critical District 2-4A volleyball contest for both teams, the Los Alamos Hilltoppers and the Bernalillo Spartans met for the second time this season.
The Spartans and the Hilltoppers played a nip-and-tuck first match Sept. 28 at Bernalillo, in which Los Alamos prevailed 3-1 but the sets were close throughout. And with the Spartans trying to cling to the hope of wrenching the 2-4A title from the Hilltoppers, it seemed Saturday’s match was going to be more of the same.
Instead, however, the Hilltoppers put together a dominant second set and never looked back, winning 25-22, 25-12, 25-17.

SANTA FE – Things got plenty hairy at the end, but the Los Alamos Hilltopper football team hung on to win a crucial District 2-4A contest Friday night.

  • LA can take big step toward clinching 2-4A vs. Spartans

Saturday, the Los Alamos Hilltopper volleyball team will have a chance to all but salt away the District 2-4A regular season title for 2011.
Standing in its way, however, is Los Alamos’ toughest district opponent.
The Hilltoppers will take on the Bernalillo Spartans Saturday night to open the second round of 2-4A matches. The Hilltoppers came through the first half of the district season unscathed and a win Saturday would put them just one victory from clinching their third consecutive 2-4A title.
The Hilltopper-Spartan contest is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Griffith Gym.
Bernalillo (11-2 overall, 3-1 in 2-4A), following its district-opening loss to Los Alamos, won three straight contests.

  • Toppers, Demons meet in huge 2-4A contest

In a short time, the Los Alamos Hilltoppers have gone from a struggling football team to one that is knocking on the door of a district championship.
Los Alamos, which limped through its first three games of the year, has won three of its last four contests and can take a big step toward clinching a District 2-4A title tonight when it faces the Santa Fe Demons.
With a big 38-0 win over reigning district champ Bernalillo last week, Los Alamos cemented its position as the team to beat in 2-4A. With a win tonight at Ivan Head Stadium, the Hilltoppers can all but seal it.
It will have to get by a Demons squad, however, that had been pegged as the district favorite and can wrench that title back with a win.

  • Cross country teams back in action Saturday at Rio Rancho

The Los Alamos Hilltopper cross country teams return to action Saturday morning after a well-earned week off.

The Hilltoppers will take part in the Rio Rancho Jamboree. Races at Rio Rancho, run on a virtually identical course to next month's state meet, will begin at 8 a.m.

Los Alamos took a week off to rest up following the Twilight Cross Country Invitational. The invitational, held in Phoenix, showcased some of the top teams in the southwest.

Against that caliber of competition, the Hilltopper boys and girls teams finished none-too-shabby.
