  • New Hilltopper hoops coach plans to maintain team's philosophy

    It took just a little over a month for the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys basketball program to find a new head coach.

    Thursday, Los Alamos High School’s athletic department announced it had hired Hilltopper assistant coach Fil Dominguez to replace former head coach Matt King.

    Dominguez will be the third head coach the Hilltoppers have had in as many years, but he said he plans to adopt much of King’s philosophy, which should give a sense of stability to the program.

  • Bridgewater is tops this week

    Haley Bridgewater just nipped and Katie Bridgewater as the top predictors in this week’s Pace Race.
    The Pace Race was held Tuesday in the trails along the White Rock perimeter. In all, 41 runners and walkers took part.
    Haley Bridgewater was off by just one second from her predicted finish time on the 1-mile course Tuesday, while Katie Bridgewater was just two seconds off.
    The top predictors on the 3-mile course included Eric Burnside (14 seconds), Todd Haines (18 seconds) and Nathan Romero (23 seconds).
    The fastest finisher on the 1-mile course was Gabe Katko. Kim Katko was the fastest female finisher.
    On the 3-mile course, Michael Jablin was the fastest finisher. Laura McClellan was the top female finisher.

  • LAGC set to host women's state championship tourney

    The 70th annual New Mexico State Women’s Golf Championship will be hosted this year by Los Alamos Golf Course.
    The state women’s championship is a match-play event pitting some of the top amateur players in the state. The event starts with a qualification round Monday, then three days of match play starting Tuesday.
    Monday’s qualifying round tees off at 8:30 a.m. The qualifying round will feature players with handicap ratings between zero and 14.9.
    A dozen players are expected to compete in qualifying, including top northern New Mexico prep player Chanet Fiorina and defending champion Marissa Bautista.

  • Dominguez hired as new boys hoops coach

    Los Alamos High School announced Thursday afternoon that it had hired Fil Dominguez as its new boys basketball head coach.
    Dominguez, who was an assistant with the LAHS program last year, has previously been a head coach at McCurdy High School in Santa Cruz. He has also been an assistant at the prep level and has coached at the middle school level.

  • Postponed 5K race is a go for Saturday

    William Hill has been hopping for the last couple of days to put the finishing touches on the Firecracker 5K event.
    Hill, the sports director at the Family YMCA of Los Alamos, is the primary organizer of the race, which will be Saturday starting at the YMCA’s facility on 15th Street.
    The 5K race, which has in recent years turned into one of the more popular local races, was originally scheduled to take place on Independence Day. The race was postponed, however, due to the effects of the Las Conchas Fire in late June and the ensuing evacuation of the town.
    Things are finally settling down to the point where events such as these can be rescheduled and Hill said he’s expecting the event to be a good one.

  • LA athletes clean up at Senior Games

    Once again, Los Alamos senior Olympians had a huge showing at this year’s New Mexico Senior Olympic Summer Games.

    The New Mexico Senior Olympics was held for the fifth straight year in Las Cruces on the campus of New Mexico State University. The Games concluded Saturday. Nearly 1,000 participants from around the state took part this year.

    Los Alamos participants grabbed 43 gold medals at the state Games, including dominating the swimming events and grabbing a total of 10 golds in the cycling and track events.

  • Making a Big Splash

    Swimmers and swim teams from all around the state are at the Larry R. Walkup Center for the New Mexico Long Course State Championship.

    Boys soccer tryouts start Monday

    Tryouts for the Los Alamos High School boys soccer program will be held Aug. 8-12.
    Tryouts for the 2011 season will start at 8 a.m.
    Tryouts will run from 8-9:30 a.m. at North Mesa Field and 4-6:30 p.m. at Overlook Park. Participants will need running shoes, cleats, shin guards (afternoon session only) and water.

    Cross country teams meet tonight

    A meeting for interested participants in the 2011 Los Alamos High School cross country program will take place Aug. 3 at LAHS’ Auxiliary Gymnasium, while season practice starts Aug. 8.
    LAHS cross country participation is open to all boys and girls in grades 9-12.

  • True to Form Football
