  • Hilltopper LB Knapp is North All-Star

David Knapp received the highest postseason honors for 2011, culminating in an invitation to this summer’s All-Star Game.
Knapp, the Los Alamos Hilltopper football team’s top defensive performer in the 2011 regular season, was named to the North Class 4A-5A All-Star team. The All-Star selections were released Thursday by the New Mexico High School Coaches Association.
At the game, scheduled for Aug. 1 at Milne Stadium in Albuquerque, Knapp will be accompanied by two other District 2-4A representatives, safety Josh Roybal of Santa Fe and Ken Noel, head coach of Bernalillo. Former Santa Fe quarterback Jason Fitzpatrick, who transferred to Rio Rancho, also made the North roster.

  • Storms give Pajarito a push to open

Ski season is finally here, and for skiers and for Pajarito Mountain alike, it comes just in time.
Pajarito will open for the season Saturday, thanks to a pair of snowstorms that dropped more than a foot of snow Monday and Tuesday.
There is still plenty of work to do, said Pajarito general manager Tom Long, prior to the opening, set for 9 a.m.
“We’re still grooming the mountain,” Long said. “We’re getting the mountain dressed up, we’re getting the ramps for the unloading areas on the lifts. We’re putting up signs for the patrol area…just getting all that ready for Saturday.”

  • Lucero, Aztec top All-State 4A honorees

Aztec’s Adam Lucero was named the top quarterback of Class 4A for 2011.
Lucero was among six players from the 4A champion Aztec Tiger team that was named first team All-State. The All-State teams were announced Tuesday by the New Mexico High School Coaches Association.
No one from the Los Alamos Hilltoppers was selected for either the first or second teams this season.
Lucero led Aztec to its first-ever football title, with the Tigers upsetting the Goddard Rockets in the championship game.
Aztec, Goddard and Valencia, which were among the top teams in the state most of the season, dominated the first team selections. No player from District 2-4A was picked for All-State honors this season.

  • LA finishes fifth at Jaguar tournament

SANTA FE – It was a long day but it was a good day.
After struggling at the 2010 Jaguar Invitational Tournament, the Los Alamos Hilltopper wrestling team had a top-five showing at the 2011 event, picking up seven medals.
The Hilltoppers finished Saturday’s Jaguar Invitational with 110.0 points, good enough for fifth place. The Hilltoppers actually started the final round in third place, but strong finishes by both Deming and Capital, along with an unfortunate turn of events for Los Alamos 220-pounder Diego Madrid, saw the team slip.
“(Seven) medals is pretty good,” Los Alamos head coach Bob Geyer said. “Last year we just did one and this year’s tournament I thought was tougher than last year’s.”
