  • Former LA pitcher to throw for Santa Fe

A former Los Alamos Hilltopper standout pitcher is taking the first step toward what he’s hoping is a career in pro baseball.
Scott Berkebile, a 2010 graduate of Los Alamos High School, has made it onto the roster of the Santa Fe Fuego, an expansion team in the Pecos League.
During his prep career, Berkebile was one of the most effective closers in 4A. Following his prep career, he tried out for the University of New Mexico baseball team, earning a spot, but left school before playing with the team.
Following that, Berkebile went to Phoenix hoping to further his baseball career when he heard about the Fuego’s tryout. Berkebile clocked 93 miles per hour on the radar gun during his tryout, which immediately cemented him a spot on the squad.

  • ´Toppers open season with tough test

Say one thing about the Los Alamos Hilltopper baseball team: it’s not easing into the season.
Limping into the season? Most definitely.
The Hilltoppers opened their 2012 campaign Saturday at with a doubleheader against Piedra Vista, the two-time defending state champion, which is rumored to have perhaps the best team it has ever had this year. Immediately in Los Alamos’ future is Los Lunas, a potential top-five team, before it opens its home season March 3 against Moriarty.
“I love it for us,” Los Alamos veteran manager Mike Gill said. “We may take our lumps, but it helps us get ready for district.”

  • LA tripped up in semis by Bernalillo

BERNALILLO — Brandon Saiz had been one of the best players in District 2-4A over the course of the regular season.
But Saiz, point guard of the Bernalillo Spartan basketball team, rolled his ankle last week and was unavailable for Thursday’s District 2-4A semifinal contest.
Things seemed to have stacked up about as well as they could for the Los Alamos Hilltoppers, who had struggled to stop Saiz in two previous meetings between the teams. Additionally, the Hilltoppers were going into the semifinal off a big win against Española Valley.

  • LA hopes third time's the charm against Bernalillo

Tonight’s District 2-4A semifinal boys basketball game could be a war and the Los Alamos Hilltoppers have their trenches all ready.
Los Alamos will take on the Bernalillo Spartans tonight for the right to advance to the district tournament championship game. Tip-off time is 7 p.m. in Bernalillo.
Tonight’s game will be the third meeting of the season between the two teams. Bernalillo has prevailed in both meetings, but Los Alamos had chances in both to pull off upsets.
Whether Los Alamos (11-16 overall, 4-5 in 2-4A) can pull of the upset, as well as build on the momentum it captured following a big win over Española Valley Tuesday night, remains to be seen.

  • LA knocked out in quarters by Bernalillo Tuesday, 36-33

Early in the fourth quarter of Tuesday’s girls basketball game, Marissa Valencia was sitting firmly at the end of the bench.
In the endgame, Valencia was spearheading a big comeback.
Valencia, the Bernalillo Spartans’ most dangerous player, came up big in the six minutes of the contest, scoring nine points to lead the Spartans to an upset victory over the Los Alamos Hilltoppers at Griffith Gymnasium.
The Hilltoppers, the No. 3 seed in the District 2-4A championship tournament, were knocked out in their first district playoff contest.
The Spartans, who trailed by as many as seven points early in the fourth quarter, finished off the contest on a 10-2 run, earning a 36-33 victory and advancing to the 2-4A semifinal contest.

  • Toppers advance to 2-4A semifinal

Less than a month ago, the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys basketball team was sitting at 1-3 in the District 2-4A standings, languishing near the basement.
But the Hilltoppers pulled things together late in the season and won some big games when they needed to.
Now, the Hilltoppers are headed to the district semifinal contest.
Tuesday night, in front of a hostile crowd at Griffith Gymnasium, the Hilltoppers earned another key victory and took a huge step to gaining a bid into the Class 4A tournament.
Los Alamos withstood a late push by the Española Valley Sundevils, who moved to within two points with three minutes remaining, to win Tuesday’s District 2-4A quarterfinal contest 42-37.
