  • Toppers win on late-game shot

JACONA – It was a wild finish to a tight ballgame Thursday night, but the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys basketball team prevailed over a longtime rival.
Los Alamos traveled just down the road to visit the Pojoaque Elks Thursday night with both teams looking to pick up some momentum as they get ready to start district play next week.
With only 10 seconds remaining, Los Alamos’ Nick Baker scored on a third-chance bucket after a mad scrum for a pair of rebounds. With time left, however the Elks moved the ball back down the court, but couldn’t get off a decent look late, persevering a 44-43 victory at Ben Lujan Gymnasium.

  • ’Toppers, Elks lock horns tonight

A pair of old foes will meet again tonight at Jacona Gymnasium.
The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys basketball team will take on the Pojoaque Elks just down the road. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Los Alamos and Pojoaque are both winding down their nondistrict seasons and are looking to grab some momentum before they head into districts that are considered two of the best in the state.
The Hilltoppers (5-10) dropped a 48-43 decision Tuesday night to St. Pius X, a game Los Alamos trailed by as many as 15 points at the half before cutting the St. Pius edge to just two early in the fourth quarter.
The Elks (6-9), meanwhile, have had an up-and-down season so far, but have won three straight and four of their last five.

  • Toppers knock off Chargers, Rams

The second half of the winter season didn’t get off to the start the Los Alamos Hilltopper wrestling team was hoping.
After a disappointing finish Saturday, the Hilltoppers were hoping to bounce back at home Wednesday, and it did. The Hilltoppers knocked off a pair of visiting teams at Auxiliary Gymnasium, defeating both Albuquerque Academy and Rio Rancho.
Los Alamos picked up a decisive team victory over Academy, taking a 42-23 decision. In the other contest, which featured much of the Rams’ younger wrestlers, Los Alamos nipped the Rams 42-39.
Wednesday’s competition was originally scheduled to be a quadrangular meet, but Pecos, the fourth invitee, was a no-show. Los Alamos will travel to Pecos for a tournament this weekend.

  • Hilltoppers fall short in comeback attempt

After a ruinous second quarter, the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys basketball team nearly made up for it in the second half of Tuesday’s game.
Los Alamos hosted the fourth-ranked St. Pius X Sartans Tuesday at Griffith Gymnasium. Not only are the two teams longtime rivals, Los Alamos had a chance to make a big statement with just over a week before the start of the District 2-4A season.
But the Hilltoppers, after playing virtually even with the Sartans in the opening period, managed just four points in the second quarter. The second of the two buckets the Hilltoppers managed in the quarter came with under 30 seconds left before the half.

  • Toppers, Sartans to clash tonight

The Los Alamos Hilltoppers boys basketball team will take on an old foe tonight at Griffith Gymnasium.

Los Alamos will face the St. Pius X Sartans. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.

The two teams have a long history, including being District 2-4A rivals during the 2000-2006 seasons.

This week, the Sartans (9-4) are the No. 4-ranked team in Class 4A and have already compiled some impressive wins, including an 85-65 victory over the team that replaced it in 2-4A, the Bernalillo Spartans.

  • ´Toppers come away with big wins at home Saturday

The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys and girls swim teams picked up easy wins at Saturday’s Los Alamos Quadrangular meet.
The Hilltopper girls were 100 points better than runner-up Taos Saturday, rolling up 504 points. The Hilltopper boys, meanwhile, finished with 524 points, well ahead of the other four teams at the meet combined.
Along the way, Los Alamos picked up one new state qualification time. Ashlynn Bennett punched her ticket to the state meet in the 50-yard freestyle, earning a top finish with her time of 27.01 seconds.
Bennett won both her individual events for the Hilltopper girls, while Molly Finn earned a win in the 200 freestyle and a second-place finish in the 500 freestyle.

  • Toppers finish 9th at Moriarty contest

The winter break usually affords sports teams a little breather in the middle of the season.
In the case of the Los Alamos Hilltopper wrestling team, it might have been too long a layoff.
The Hilltoppers struggled to a ninth-place finish Saturday at the Moriarty Pinto Invitational. The Hilltoppers lost all four of their duals contests, one of which, a particularly ugly 60-18 defeat, came at the hands of a team the Hilltoppers perhaps should’ve hung closer with, the Valley Vikings.
It was a low-energy showing for Los Alamos Saturday, something that may have been due at least in part to the long layoff — the Hilltoppers hadn’t wrestled competitively in nearly three weeks.
