  • LA Triatomics host Atomic Man

    Mike Rahmer of Tijeras and Caroline Collona of Taos were the top finishers in the Fat Man divisions of the Atomic Man Duathlon Sunday.
    The Atomic Man Duathlon is an annual run-bike-run hosted by the Los Alamos Triatomics, a local multi-discipline athletic club. Athletes started in White Rock and headed down and back toward Bandlelier National Monument on N.M. 4 and back.
    Rahmer, the overall men’s Fat Man winner, finished with a time of 2 hours, 10 minutes, 4 seconds, nearly 4-1/2 minutes better than James Webster of Albuquerque. Colonna was more than five minutes ahead of her closest competitor, Los Alamos’ Amy Regan, to take the women’s Fat Man division title.

  • Topper girls take 2nd in season finale

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper girls track and field team had a big showing in its final regular season meet of 2012.
    The Hilltoppers picked up second place at the Cleveland Invitational Friday. They grabbed 81 points to take the runner-up spot in team standings.
    Meanwhile, the Hilltopper boys finished with 44 points, taking fourth place in the event. Host Cleveland picked up solid victories in both the boys and girls team competition.
    Both teams will take part in the District 2-4A championship meet Friday and Saturday. Santa Fe will host the 2012 district meet.
    For the Los Alamos girls, Amanda Mercer won the first race of her prep career, taking top honors in the 3200 meters.

  • Toppers, Patriots meet in opener

    As expected, the Los Alamos Hilltopper baseball team earned its way into the top half of the Class 4A playoffs this season.

    The Hilltoppers grabbed the No. 7 seed for the state playoffs and will be at home for the opening round of the Class 4A tournament. They will host the Miyamura Patriots in the first round.

    The first round of the tournament is a best-of-three format. Los Alamos and Miyamura will play game one at 4 p.m. Friday. Game two is set for 11 a.m. Saturday and, if the third game is necessary, will be played approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of game two.

  • ´Toppers open state singles, doubles play

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys and girls tennis teams start the 2012 state tournament with individual competition Wednesday.
    The 4A championship tournament will be at the Jerry Cline Tennis Complex in Albuquerque. The singles and doubles tournaments will continue through Thursday and team competition is slated for Friday and Saturday.
    Los Alamos will send two singles players, both on the boys side, and four doubles teams, three on the girls side.
    Wednesday’s doubles matches will begin at 3:30 p.m. Boys singles competition is scheduled for 8 p.m.

  • LA meets St. Pius in tourney opener

    By the luck of the draw, the Los Alamos Hilltopper softball team will take on an old foe in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs.
    Los Alamos will take on the St. Pius X Sartans in a single elimination contest Saturday at Overlook Park. Game time is set for 11:30 a.m.
    The Class 4A brackets were released Sunday. Los Alamos, which won the District 2-4A championship this season, earned the No. 6 seed in the tournament.
    Following the first round of games, the tournament shifts to a double-elimination format for the remaining eight teams. The double-elimination contests start Thursday in Rio Rancho.

  • Topper boys, girls are runners-up

    SANTA FE — To finish off their 2012 season, the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys and girls golf team both finished a solid second place in the District 2-4A championship.
    Los Alamos picked up the runner-up slot in the girls competition, shooting a team total of 399. Los Alamos’ boys shot a team 354 to finish as the runner-up on that side of the tournament.
    The 2-4A championship was Monday at the Marty Sanchez Links de Santa Fe.

  • LA girls No. 2 in 4A tennis draw

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper girls tennis team earned a No. 2 seed in the upcoming Class 4A team tournament, while the Hilltopper boys picked up a No. 8 seed.

    In singles competition, Stephen Townsley is the No. 3 seed in the boys 4A draw, while Gillian Hsieh-Ratliff/Madeline Margevicius and Susanna Lucido/Colleen Fitzsimmons are the Nos. 3 and 4 in the girls doubles draw.

    The state tennis draws were released Sunday by the New Mexico Activities Association. Full brackets can be viewed at nmact.org.

    Singles and doubles competition starts Wednesday afternoon and continues through Thursday at the Jerry Cline Tennis Complex in Albuquerque. Team competition starts Friday morning.

  • Baseball, softball brackets announced

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper softball team picked up a No. 6 seed and the Hilltopper baseball team earned a No. 7 seed in the upcoming Class 4A playoffs.

    The New Mexico Activities Association released the baseball and softball postseason brackets Sunday. Full brackets can be viewed at nmact.org.

    By virtue of their seeds, both Hilltopper teams will host opening round games this week.

    Los Alamos’ baseball team will host the 10th-seeded Miyamura Patriots in the opening round. Class 4A baseball plays a best 2-of-3 series in the first round and moves to single elimination afterward.

    The first game of the series is scheduled for Friday and the other game or games, if necessary, will be Saturday. No times have yet been announced.

  • Playoff brackets due out

    The New Mexico Activities Association is scheduled to release the baseball and softball postseason Class 4A brackets today.
    Brackets will appear on the NMAA’s website, nmact.org.
    Both Los Alamos’ baseball and softball teams won District 2-4A titles this season and picked up automatic bids into the state tournament.
    Los Alamos’ baseball team, which was a 21-0 winner over Capital Saturday, will play a best-of-three opening round series starting Friday.
    Los Alamos’ softball team will appear in a single-elimination game either Friday or Saturday.
    The top eight seeds in 4A will host this weekend.
