  • Toppers come from behind to win

SANTA FE — After one half of play, the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys basketball team was reeling.
In the second half, however, the Hilltoppers found their feet and, in doing so, picked up a much-needed District 2-4A win.
After managing just 13 points in the first half Tuesday night against the Santa Fe Demons, Los Alamos took a control of the contest in the third quarter, holding Santa Fe without a field goal for an 8-minute stretch to earn a 47-41 come-from-behind win at Toby Roybal Memorial Gymnasium.

  • A Renegade Stampede in Los Alamos

The New Mexico Renegades junior ‘A’ hockey team hosted the first ever Western States Hockey League outdoor game Saturday night at Los Alamos County Ice Rink. The Renegades (15-19-2) scored a goal in the first overtime period to top the Cheyenne Stampede (18-20-4)  by a score of 6-5.

  • Topper hoops teams in bind heading into this week's games

With just a handful of games left on the schedule, it’s a critical time for the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys and girls to pick up some District 2-4A wins.
Both teams have critical games left on their district schedules, starting tonight when the Hilltopper boys play at Santa Fe. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Los Alamos’ boys missed out on an opportunity Saturday night to get right into the hunt of the 2-4A race, falling at home to what appeared going into the contest a vulnerable Bernalillo Spartans squad.
The Spartans came away Saturday with a 67-59 victory at Griffith Gym, keeping them in second place in the 2-4A standings despite a Jan. 31 loss at Española Valley.

  • Topper girls are fifth, boys are sixth at Saturday’s meet

Ashlynn Bennett and Amy Neal were the top finishers for the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls swimming and diving team in its final regular season meet Saturday.
The Hilltopper boys and girls competed in the Albuquerque Public Schools End-of-Year Invitational Saturday. The Hilltopper girls finished fifth among the seven competing teams at the meet, while Los Alamos’ boys placed sixth overall.
La Cueva won the girls competition while Cibola held off a big charge from La Cueva’s boys to win.
Bennett, Los Alamos’ top competitor, took second place in both the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard backstroke to pace the girls’ efforts. In girls diving, Amy Neal picked up 143.35 points, good enough for third place.

  • Spartans outgun LA in second half to win 67-59

In what was probably the biggest game of its season to date, the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys basketball team had a chance to reverse its fortunes in a hurry Saturday night.
Los Alamos could’ve made a big splash in the District 2-4A standings if it could’ve pulled off an upset against the Bernalillo Spartans. Los Alamos’ upset prospects looked good after the first half at Griffith Gymnasium Saturday, taking a 30-26 lead into the locker room, but the Spartans bounced back in a big way in the third quarter.
The Spartans outscored the Hilltoppers 20-8 in the third quarter and survived a comeback attempt in the fourth quarter to take a 67-59 decision.

  • ´Toppers take first place at Sanchez Invite

If the Los Alamos Hilltopper wrestling team was in need of momentum heading into the District 2-4A tournament this week, it found some on Saturday.
Los Alamos hosted its annual Bryan Sanchez Memorial Invitational Saturday, the final event of its regular season. In the tournament, Los Alamos’ top squad finished with 163 points to pick up the team victory, outdistancing the Valencia Jaguars, who finished with 139 points.
At the tournament, Los Alamos’ grapplers earned four top weight-class finishes. Cory Geyer was the big winner at 152 pounds, Brian Geyer won at 170 pound, Jonathan Schueler won a two-man battle at heavyweight and Arnoldo Ortiz picked up a win in the closest-contested weight class of the day, 182 pounds.

  • Renegades Come to LA

The New Mexico Renegades hockey team held a practice session Thursday morning at Los Alamos County Ice Rink in anticipation of its game Saturday. The Renegades will take on the Cheyenne Stampede Saturday at the rink.
