  • Around the Bend

Los Alamos’ Tyler Thorn skates around the back of the goal during a Jan. 27 game at Los Alamos County Ice Rink. The Hilltoppers will play the La Cueva Bears in the opening round of the Year-End Tournament Saturday. That game is scheduled for 7 a.m. The purer team (teams where all the players are from the same high school) winner will advance to the national playoff tournament. Los Alamos’ tournament games will be broadcast live from Taos on KRSN AM 1490.

  • Lobos in need of a victory

The finish definitely isn’t ho-hum. The winner will have to have strong legs, a strong heart and a little help from its enemies.
The University of New Mexico Lobos stumbled out of the Mountain West gate, took a two-game lead in the back stretch, stumbled again, and make the turn toward the finish line neck-in-neck with San Diego State and UNLV.
Will it be a photo finish with three teams at 10-4?
“I think we are as urgent as we’ve ever been,” said Lobo Drew Gordon. “It’s a street fight every time we go out. It’s not going to be a cake walk.”
Said teammate Kendall Williams: “We’re real hungry as a team. We have a chance to get a ring and go to Vegas on a two-game winning streak.”

  • Toppers pick up win in opener against Belen, 9-5

The Los Alamos Hilltopper softball team earned a win in its 2012 season opener Tuesday afternoon.

The Hilltoppers pushed five runs across in the top of the sixth inning to come back from a 5-4 deficit. Starting pitcher Rachel Anaya pitched around trouble in both the bottom of the sixth and bottom of the seventh to secure a 9-5 win against the Belen Eagles.

The Hilltoppers fell behind at Belen after five innings. The Eagles scored twice in the bottom of the fifth to take a 5-4 lead, but the Hilltoppers strung together several singles to manufacture those five runs.

Los Alamos manager Roger Anaya said he was happy to get a road win to kick off the season, particularly before the team heads to the very tough Piedra Vista Invitational this weekend.

  • Toppers to take on Pirates Friday

The good news for the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls basketball team is that it made the playoff field.
The bad news is the Hilltoppers will have to go against one of the premier teams in the state in round one.
Los Alamos picked up the 16th and final seed in the Class 4A playoffs, necessitating it takes on the powerful Grants Pirates in the opening round. That game is scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday in Grants.
This is a rematch from the first round of the 2010-11 state tournament. Grants, the No. 5 seed last year, topped the No. 12 Hilltoppers 46-28 at Grants.

  • LA is seeded last in 4A playoff bracket

The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys basketball team has a tall order to fill in the opening round of the Class 4A state tournament.
Los Alamos picked up the 16th and final seed in the upcoming state playoffs. With the No. 16 seed, Los Alamos will have to face top-seeded Goddard in Saturday’s opening round.
Saturday’s game is scheduled for 4 p.m. in Roswell.
The Hilltoppers (11-17), who finished third in the District 2 regular season and tournament, played Goddard’s Rockets (24-2) earlier this season. The Hilltoppers hung with the Rockets through the first half but the Rockets pulled away in the second half to earn a 59-45 victory in Roswell.

  • Toppers open season against Belen

To say that the Four Corners area is like a home away from home for the Los Alamos Hilltopper softball team is something of an understatement.
Los Alamos will play nearly as many games this season in the Farmington area as it will in White Rock, starting with a tournament this weekend.
But first up for the Hilltoppers, as they officially get going on their 2012 season, is a road game this afternoon at Belen.
“We’re ready to go for the season,” said Los Alamos fourth-year manager Roger Anaya. “We don’t know what to expect out of Belen. They play in a very competitive district with Valencia and Moriarty…but it’ll be interesting to see how we do. They’re excited to get the season going.”

  • LA boys, girls get bottom seed in 4A tourneys

Both the Los Alamos boys and girls basketball teams made the Class 4A state tournament field. Unfortunately for both, the teams will be going in as the No. 16 seed.

Los Alamos' boys finished as the bottom seed in that tournament and will face the Goddard Rockets, the No. 1 seed in the state, Saturday night.

Friday night, the Hilltopper girls will take on the Grants Pirates, the top seed in the girls 4A tournament. This is a rematch from the 2010-11 state tournament.

More information on the tournaments will be in Tuesday's Los Alamos Monitor.
