The Los Alamos Hilltopper hockey team will open its season tonight at the county ice rink.
Los Alamos will face Santa Fe in its opener at 8:15 p.m. The game will also be broadcast live on KRSN.
The Hilltoppers are the last team in the New Mexico Interscholastic Ice Hockey League to start the season. The Hilltoppers had to wait until the ice rink opened for the season before they could get their season going.
Along with tonight’s contest against the Blue Jackets (0-3-0), Los Alamos will play three of its first games at home. Los Alamos will host St. Pius X Dec. 6 and La Cueva Dec. 13.
Last season, Los Alamos upset Taos to claim the NMIIHL pure team championship. Los Alamos’ Cory Schramm scored with just over a minute remaining in regulation to tie the score and Nevin Gupta tallied in overtime to give the Hilltoppers a 4-3 victory.
Schramm returns for his sophomore season on an underclassman-heavy roster. Los Alamos features only two seniors, Tyler Thorn and Tanner Kennedy.
Currently in NMIIHL play, the two teams from El Paso, Texas, are tied for the lead at the top of the standings while Taos has won the only contest it has played, a 3-2 victory over Rio Rancho Nov. 16.
