The Los Alamos boys' and girls' basketball teams both had tough contests Tuesday night.
The girls managed to take down St. Pius X, 60-57, while the boys came up just short against Pojoaque, 48-46.
The Hilltopper girls trailed the Sartans heading into the forth quarter, but Ashley Logan's third 3-pointer of the game tied it at 37. The 'Toppers eventually took a nine-point lead, but St. Pius X got within one of Los Alamos, 56-55, with just over a minute left in the contest. A couple late buckets from Ashlynn Trujillo, however, helped Los Alamos finish on top.
The Hilltopper girls, who are MaxPreps' third-ranked team in Class 5A, improved to 11-1 with the win. "We're going to grab a lot of attention," Los Alamos head coach Nestor Trujillo said. "From here on out, it's going to be who can execute and who can grind out wins."
The Hilltopper boys took a three-point lead into the fourth quarter against Pojoaque, but the Elks hit three 3-pointers in a row to take the lead.
Trailing by one with 11 seconds left in the contest, a Hilltopper drove to the hoop and got an open look, but missed the layup that would have been the go-ahead basket.
