  • Girls basketball: Big 4th quarter lifts LA over Spartans

    The playoffs, for all intents and purposes, started Thursday for the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls basketball team.

    And what the Hilltoppers saw Thursday is what they’re probably going to see for the balance of their 2010-11 season.

    Los Alamos struggled with the trapping pressure of the Bernalillo Spartans for much of Thursday’s District 2AAAA tournament semifinal game. However, Los Alamos made some big buckets in crunch time to pull away late and upend Bernalillo 44-31.

  • Hockey: Year-End Tourney at Taos will determine state champ

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper hockey team will head into the Year-End Tournament this weekend as the No. 2 seed.
    The Year-End Tournament, which will determine the New Mexico Interscholastic Ice Hockey League champion, will start Friday and continue through Sunday at the Taos Youth and Family Center.
    Los Alamos, the reigning state champion, will go into the tournament after a 15-2-1 regular season. It finished right behind Taos, the tournament’s top seed, which posted a 16-2 record this year.

  • LAHS spring sports start this weekend with baseball, tennis

    Spring is starting early in northern New Mexico. At least it is for a pair of Los Alamos Hilltopper programs.
    Both the Hilltopper baseball and tennis teams open their seasons this weekend, officially kicking off the spring 2011 sports season.
    Los Alamos’ boys and girls tennis teams will head south to play in the two-day Carlsbad Invitational, which starts Friday. Saturday, the Los Alamos baseball team has a season-opening doubleheader scheduled in Farmington against Piedra Vista.

  • LAHS ATHLETICS: Wrestlers, swimmers battle at state

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper wrestling and swimming and diving teams took part in the state championship meets this past weekend.

  • Boys basketball: Toppers knocked out in quarterfinal

    SANTA FE — No one could argue that through the course of the second half of the season the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys basketball team made some strides.
    However, those strides didn’t equate to many victories.

  • LA boys win District opening nailbiter

    Los Alamos forward Bobby Sanders elevates for a layup during Monday night’s District 2AAAA tournament game. The Hilltoppers took on the Bernalillo Spartans at home in the tournament’s first round. The Hilltoppers will travel to Santa Fe tonight for a second-round contest.
