  • Softball: LA scores 5 times in fourth to drop Pojoaque

    A big five-run rally in the fourth inning, aided by four errors, put Tuesday’s game away for the Los Alamos Hilltopper softball team.
    Los Alamos hosted its downhill rival, the Pojoaque Elks, Tuesday at Overlook Park in just its second home appearance of the season. Los Alamos scored 10 runs in a three-inning span and tacked on another in the bottom of the sixth to close out the game early, topping Pojoaque 11-1.
    Along with the big offensive effort, Hilltopper pitcher Monika Teter struck out five of the first six batters she faced and gave up just one unearned run on the afternoon as she earned her second victory at home.

  • Men's basketball: Tide knocks Lobos out of NIT

    TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — Trevor Releford's speedy drives, Tony Mitchell's high-flying dunks and an effective dose of full-court pressure kept Alabama alive in the National Invitation Tournament.

    Mitchell scored 23 points and Releford matched his career-high with 20 to lead the Crimson Tide to a 74-67 win over New Mexico Monday night in the second round of the NIT.

    The Tide (23-11), mostly known for its defense, made 15 of 20 shots in the second half to move into the quarterfinals. Alabama will host Miami on Wednesday night, aiming for its sixth trip to the NIT final four at Madison Square Garden.

    Spring golf opener cut short by wind

    The spring season opener for the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys golf team was cut short Monday.
    Los Alamos started a round at the Belen Invitational Monday morning, but wind speeds were hitting 50 mph during play. The wind and accompanying dust made the Tierra Del Sol course virtually unplayable.
    Hilltopper head coach John Stam said the tournament, one of five scheduled for his team this spring, may be rescheduled for April 7.

    Dog Jog registration open

    The 2011 Dog Jog is scheduled for April 16 in White Rock.

  • Track and field: LA girls win big Saturday, boys are 2nd behind Rams

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper girls track and field team picked up its second win of the season in three outings Saturday, taking top honors at the Bernalillo Invitational.
    Meanwhile, the Hilltopper boys finished a strong second behind Rio Rancho at the same event.
    Los Alamos’ girls earned 128.5 points Saturday, easily outdistancing Rio Rancho in second place. Only Class 5A school Rio Rancho (73) and 3A Las Vegas Robertson (66) finished with even half the Hilltoppers’ total in the 10-team event.

  • Fishing report 03-20-11

    Northeast

    Cimarron River: Flows below Eagle Nest Dam are .30 cfs and 6.2 cfs near Cimarron. Fishing conditions are slow due to water levels and cold weather. Conditions are not likely to improve much until spring when warmer weather and flows come back up.
    Costilla Creek: The flow is 6.6 cfs near the town of Costilla. No report due to ice and low flows.

  • Hockey: LA heads to Ill. for national tourney

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper hockey team will take part in the 2011 High School National Championships this week.
    Los Alamos, one of the top teams in New Mexico, opens the national tournament with pool play staring Wednesday. Los Alamos has three scheduled games next week and, should it survive through next Sunday, would play for the national title.
    The tournament will be played in Bensenville, Ill., a suburb of Chicago, near Lake Michigan.

  • Softball: LA tops Santa Fe, drops 3 at tourney

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper softball team lost three of four contests at the Farmington Invitational this weekend.
    Los Alamos found itself on the wrong ends of lopsided scores against Kirtland Central, Rio Rancho and Farmington. In its final game of the weekend, however, Los Alamos was able to bounce back and knock off Santa Fe, a District 2AAAA opponent, by a lopsided score of its own.
