  • LA upends Espanola Valley at home

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys basketball team picked up a big win over the Espanola Valley Sundevils Friday night at Griffith Gymnasium.

    Los Alamos outscored Espanola Valley 18-6 in the second quarter and held on in the second half despite missing eight free throws in the fourth quarter to win 56-45.

    Nate Carver scored 17 points and Nick Baker finished with 10 points to lead the team to victory.

  • LA opens tennis season

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper tennis teams officially kick off the spring 2012 season this weekend as they travel to the El Paso (Texas) Americas Invitational. Nasim Andrews, seen here during a 2011 match at Santa Fe, is one of five seniors expected back this season for the Hilltopper girls. Los Alamos is scheduled to play its first home event of the season March 3.

  • Hilltoppers, Sundevils set to tangle tonight

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys basketball team will have an important contest against its arch-rival tonight in Griffith Gymnasium.
    The Hilltoppers (9-15 overall, 2-4 in 2-4A) are in need of a win to improve their standings in the district race and will need to pick it up against the Española Valley Sundevils.
    The game is scheduled for 7 p.m.
    The Sundevils (8-15, 2-3) are in much the same position as the Hilltoppers. The winner of tonight’s game has a shot at the No. 3 position in the upcoming district tournament, which means a first-round tournament bye.
    The two teams met Jan. 24 at Española Valley, with the Sundevils holding on for a 37-33 win.

  • District wrestling tourney is Saturday

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper wrestling team is getting geared up for what it’s hoping will be a big showing Saturday.
    Los Alamos feels good about its chances to vie for a District 2-4A team title, but knows it will have to knock off defending 2-4A champ and host school for this year’s tournament, Santa Fe.
    The Hilltoppers are going into the tournament with some confidence following one of their better regular season showings in recent memory, that culminated with a win at the Bryan Sanchez Memorial Invitational last week.
    At last week’s tournament, the Hilltoppers’ showcase home event, Los Alamos finished with 163 team points to take top honors among the nine competing teams.

  • LAHA girls team to host Gunnison, Colo.

    The Los Alamos Hockey Association’s U12 girls hockey team will be at home for a pair of games against Gunnison, Colo., this weekend.
    The team, now in its second season, will host Gunnison Feb. 11-12 at Los Alamos County Ice Rink. Admission for the two games is free.
    The U12 girls hockey team has shown some marked improvement from its inaugural season.
    In 2010-11, LAHA formed the team, drawing from three different hockey age groups to fill out their season roster.

  • LA, Taos square off in rivalry contest

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper hockey team will host its arch-rival tonight in one of its final two home games of the 2011-12 season.
    Los Alamos will face off against Taos tonight. Game time is set for 8 p.m.
    The Hilltoppers will wrap up their regular season with four contests, including tonight’s game against the Ice Tigers, who have a longstanding rivalry with the Hilltoppers.
    Also this weekend, Los Alamos will host the Albuquerque Outkast Friday night. That game marks Senior and Coaches Appreciation Night. Los Alamos will also play two games on Sunday morning, both of those at Outpost Ice Arena in Albuquerque.

  • Toppers sunk in 2nd half by Demons

    With the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls basketball team looking to pick up some momentum heading into the final stretch before the District 2-4A tournament, it put together a good 2-1/2 quarters against Santa Fe.
    Unfortunately for the Hilltoppers, however, Santa Fe’s Demons put together a better 1-1/2 quarters to earn the win Wednesday night.
    Los Alamos led by as many as 11 points against Santa Fe, which waxed the Hilltoppers in the teams’ first meeting late last month.
    But the Demons held the Hilltoppers to just one point for an 8-plus minute stretch in the third and fourth quarters. Meanwhile, the Demons broke out of their first half shooting slump to go up early in the fourth quarter.

    “White Out” of Griffith Gym is Friday night

    Los Alamos High School is urging Hilltopper basketball fans to participate in Friday’s “White Out” of Griffith Gymnasium.
    Los Alamos’ boys basketball team will play the Española Valley Sundevils Friday night. Game time is 7 p.m.
    Fans are encouraged to wear white shirts to the game, the final regular season home game for the Hilltoppers.

  • Toppers come from behind to win

    SANTA FE — After one half of play, the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys basketball team was reeling.
    In the second half, however, the Hilltoppers found their feet and, in doing so, picked up a much-needed District 2-4A win.
    After managing just 13 points in the first half Tuesday night against the Santa Fe Demons, Los Alamos took a control of the contest in the third quarter, holding Santa Fe without a field goal for an 8-minute stretch to earn a 47-41 come-from-behind win at Toby Roybal Memorial Gymnasium.
