  • LA upsets Deming, advances to Pit

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper girls basketball team broke open a tight ballgame in a big way Friday night in Deming.
    With about 7 minutes remaining in the game, the Hilltoppers held a slim 2-point edge over Deming’s Wildcats.
    From there, Los Alamos outscored Deming 24-9 to win going away and punch its ticket to the state Class 4A quarterfinals.
    With that push, 9th-seeded Los Alamos bounced 8th-seeded Deming from the playoffs, 62-45.
    This will be the first trip the Hilltoppers have made to the quarterfinals in three seasons. Their last appearance in The Pit was in 2010. They were toppled in the opening round by Grants on the road in each of the last two seasons.
    Los Alamos led the entire second half but couldn’t shake Deming.
    Both teams had trouble converting from the field in Friday’s game but Los Alamos dominated on the glass, outrebounding Deming 46-31.
    The Hilltoppers (17-12) held the Wildcats to just one point for the first four minutes of the game, but the Wildcats (17-10) would rally late in the quarter and lead 16-13.

  • Sports Briefs 03-10-13

    Church collecting used soccer equipment

    Soccer equipment for children in the country of Uganda is being collected at the Crossroads Bible Church.
    The church is located at 97 East Road in Los Alamos. Donations can be made there or at Time Out Pizza in White Rock.
    Equipment such as balls, shoes, jerseys, shorts and shin guards are being requested.

    Pace Race season starts April 2

    The Atomic City Roadrunners running club will start its 40th Pace Race season with a run April 2.
    The first Pace Race of the season will begin at the Canyon Rim Trail parking lot off N.M. 502. Race time is 6 p.m.
    Pace Races are a weekly event held Tuesdays between April and early October. They include 1- and 3-mile runs and walks at various locations around Los Alamos County.

  • LA girls dominate at track season opener

     The Los Alamos Hilltopper girls track and field team got its 2013 season started with a bang Saturday at the Albuquerque Academy Chili Quad.

    Los Alamos earned 11 first place finishes and scored in all but three events Saturday as it collected 119 team points, far outpacing second-place Rio Rancho in the four-team meet.

    Hilltopper star Laura Wendelberger came out strong in her first appearance of the season. Saturday, she grabbed two state meet qualification marks, one in the high jump and one in the triple jump.

    Also for Los Alamos’ girls, Amanda Mercer and Mikayla Pulliam went 1-2 and both qualified for May’s state Class 4A meet in the 3200 meters.

    Los Alamos’ boys also took part in Saturday’s meet. They place third in the four-team meet, earning 60 points.

    Rio Rancho won the boys team competition handily, picking up 126 points, while Academy was second with 69 points.

    Los Alamos’ distance stars, Sean Reardon and Nick Hill, both came up big Saturday, with Reardon qualifying in the 3200 meters and Hill in the 1600 meters. One of the team’s top returning throwers, Brady Stokes, also punched his ticket to state in the javelin.

  • LA uses big 4th quarter to advance in playoffs

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper girls basketball team broke open a tight ballgame in the fourth quarter at Deming Friday night.

    Los Alamos scored 27 points in the final quarter to win going away, 62-45, at Wildcat Gymnasium. Los Alamos went into the ballgame as the No. 9 seed in the 4A playoffs, while Deming was the No. 8 seed.

    The Hilltoppers (17-12) held a scant 2 point lead after three quarters of play, but dominated in the final quarter, holding the Wildcats (17-10) to 12 points.

    With the win, Los Alamos will now advance to the quarterfinal round of the Class 4A playoffs. It will play at 1:15 p.m. Tuesday in The Pit in Albuquerque.

  • Playoff games will be on KRSN this weekend

    KRSN AM 1490 will broadcast the Class 4A first round girls basketball playoff game tonight.
    KRSN will carry the broadcast from KOTS 1230 AM for tonight’s game, which is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. between the Deming Wildcats and the Los Alamos Hilltoppers.
    Gene Mortensen will be on the call Saturday night for Pojoaque Valley’s first round boys playoff game. The Elks, the No. 6 seed in the tournament, will face the 11th-seeded Bloomfield Bobcats at 5 p.m.

  • 'Toppers lose vs. Storm, Panthers in softball

    The Hilltopper softball team fell in an inter-classification game to the Cleveland Storm Thursday afternoon.
    Los Alamos scored three runs to take a 3-2 lead after 1-1/2 innings and tied the game at 5-5 after 4-1/2 innings, but the Storm scored six unanswered runs in the fifth and sixth to win 11-5 in Rio Rancho.
    Kacie Swihart of Class 5A Cleveland went 2-for-3 in the game and scored two runs to lead the Storm to the win.
    Jordan Hammock (0-1) took the loss for Los Alamos.
    This morning, Los Alamos started play in the Piedra Vista Invitational. Los Alamos was crushed in its opening pool play round game against the Piedra Vista Panthers 15-1 in a game that lasted only 3 innings.
    The Hilltoppers, who will play Gallup and Grants today in pool play as well, dropped to 0-3 on the season with this morning’s loss.

  • Baseball team falls 7-6 in St. Pius opening round

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper baseball team dropped its opening round game of the St. Pius X Invitational to El Paso, Texas.
    Los Alamos (1-3) was nipped by El Paso 7-6 in the first round and drops into the consolation round of the tournament. The St. Pius Invitational continues through Saturday.
    Of the four first round tournament games, only St. Pius’ 8-0 victory over Bernalillo wasn’t decided by one run. Socorro (Texas) defeated Los Lunas 8-7 and Centennial topped Manzano 5-4.

  • LA finishes 2nd at Farmington, plays in El Paso this weekend

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper girls tennis team finished second in last weekend’s Farmington Quadrangular match.
    Los Alamos is competing in a tournament in El Paso, Texas, this weekend, its second tournament of the season in El Paso.
    The Hilltoppers finished behind Farmington, which appears to be the team to beat once again in Class 4A. They finished ahead of St. Pius X and Piedra Vista at the tournament, two other Class 4A schools.
    Individually, Hilltopper No. 1 single Gillian Hsieh-Ratliff won two of three pool play contests, earning sweeps and giving up just seven games in those four sets. Susanna Lucido went 2-1 at No. 3 singles and Sidra Hsieh-Ratliff did likewise at No. 4 singles.
    Lucido joined with Colleen Fitzsimmons to go 2-1 in the No. 1 doubles slots.
