  • Girls golf: Toppers have rough outing at Ruidoso

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper girls golf team fared no better on day two of the Ruidoso Invitational than it did on day one.
    The Hilltoppers struggled again Tuesday at the tournament, their first of the spring season, shooting a team total of 405.
    Only the Hilltoppers’ No. 1 player, Miranda Olinger, played better the second day than the first for the Hilltoppers. Olinger, who had an allergic reaction to seafood she’d eaten the night before Monday’s opening round, finished with a 90 in Tuesday’s second round, a 17-shot improvement.
    The second round was played at Cree Meadows Golf Course in Ruidoso.
    The Hilltoppers shot a total of 800 for the two days.

  • Boys golf: Toppers boys take second at Bosque

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys golf team finished second for the second day in a row Tuesday.
    Los Alamos took part in the Bosque Invitational Tuesday in Albuquerque. The team shot a healthy 338 to take the runner-up spot, easily outdistancing third-place finisher Bosque’s 368.
    The tournament was won by the Cleveland Storm, a Class 5A team, which posted a 319.
    One day earlier, the Hilltoppers squeezed out Raton at the Capital City Invitational for second place by one shot.
    Cody Wilson of To’Hajiilee was the individual winner at the tournament, played on the Four Hills Golf Course. Wilson finished with a 2-over 74.
    The top finisher for the Hilltoppers was once again Thomas Herrera. Herrera carded a 78, placing him third.

  • Tennis: LA teams cruise to wins over Tigers

    With the 2011 season quickly winding down, the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys and girls tennis teams are trying to take advantage of the time they have left.
    Los Alamos had scheduled nine duals meets in the span of eight days, including Tuesday’s contest against the Taos Tigers. Los Alamos had three straight days of home duals events set, but today’s contest against Las Vegas Robertson was a late scratch.
    While Los Alamos’ teams are juggling their lineups to keep people fresh and to allow for Saturday night’s Los Alamos High School prom, things have been going swimmingly during this stretch run.

    Softball registration is Wednesday

    Los Alamos Little League softball will have an open registration session for the 2011 season Wednesday.
    The registration session will be from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at Bun Ryan Field on North Mesa. Girls ages 6-14 are eligible to play LALL softball. For more information, call 690-4228.

    Pace Race set for tonight

    The Atomic City Roadrunners will hold a Pace Race of the season tonight.
    The race will start at 6 p.m. near the White Rock Y on the road to the Bayo Canyon sewage plant.

  • Track and field: Ealey wins shot put at Meet of Champs

    Chase Ealey picked up her second straight victory in shot put at this year’s Marilyn Sepulveda Meet of Champions.
    The Meet of Champions, held Monday at the University of New Mexico Track and Field Complex, is an invitation-only meet attended by the top athletes in the state, regardless of classification.
    Ealey threw 44 feet, 8 inches to defend her 2010 Marilyn Sepulveda victory. Ealey broke the meet record last year with her throw of 45-2 1/2.
    Ealey also finished second in the 100 meters Monday (12.04).
    In all, 10 Hilltoppers took part in the Meet of Champions.
    All four of the Hilltopper boys competing the in the meet finished with personal best marks.

  • Boys golf: LA holds off Raton for 2nd at Capital City

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys golf team finished as the runner-up at Monday’s Capital City Invitational.
    Los Alamos held off Raton by one stroke in team competition to pick up the runner-up spot at the tournament, held at the Marty Sanchez Links de Santa Fe.
    The Hilltoppers finished with a solid team score of 327 while Raton, paced by overall individual winner Joe Apache, earned a 328.
    Thomas Herrera, the Hilltoppers’ top player, finished fourth in the individual competition Monday. Herrera finished with a 2-over 74.
    Two-time defending Class 3A state champion St. Michael’s finished the tournament with a 302 to take the team title. Apache shot a red-hot 3-under par to win the individual title.

  • Girls golf: Toppers struggle in first tourney back

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper girls golf team limped through its worst showing of the 2010-11 season Monday.
    Los Alamos opened up its spring half of the season at the Ruidoso Invitational, which continued today. In the opening round Monday, Los Alamos shot a 395, 40 shots above its worst score of the fall season.
    The tournament’s opening round was played at the Links at Sierra Blanca. Today’s round was scheduled for Cree Meadows Golf Course.
    Los Alamos, which qualified for the state tournament during the fall season, wanted to get a look at its potential opponents from the southern part of the state, many of which take part at the annual Ruidoso tournament.

  • Tennis: LA teams finish second at Academy

    Both the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys and girls tennis teams won three of four duals matches at the Albuquerque Academy Invitational this weekend.
    The Hilltopper squads knocked out some solid competition at the tournament, hosted by Academy’s Chargers Friday and Saturday, with both teams losing only to the likely No. 1 Class 4A seeds in the state.
    Los Alamos’ girls picked up arguably their biggest win of the season to date Friday, topping the Goddard Rockets 6-3 Friday.
     Los Alamos girls head coach Bruce Cottrell said a potential No. 2 seed at the state tournament hung in the balance in that contest — one of the most important determining factors in state seeding is head-to-head results.

  • Track and field: Toppers heading to Meet of Champions

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys and girls track and field teams will take several athletes to the Marilyn Sepulveda Meet of Champions Monday.
    The Sepulveda Invitational is the most prestigious meet of the regular track and field season. Individuals taking part in the invitation-only meet have posted the top marks in the state, irrespective of their teams’ classifications.
    The meet is hosted by Albuquerque Academy.
    Los Alamos’ Chase Ealey will compete in three different events at the meet Monday, while Lindsay Benage and Laura Wendelberger were invited to compete in two events.
    In all, 10 Hilltoppers will travel to Monday’s meet to compete in 14 events.
