  • Track and field: LA boys dominate district meet again

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys track and field team won big at the District 2-4A championship meet and placed 12 new qualifiers into state.
    Los Alamos earned 198 team points at the meet this weekend, held in Bernalillo, more than twice as many as Santa Fe, which finished as the runner-up. Los Alamos picked up district titles in nine different events at the two-day meet.
    The Hilltoppers will now advance to the state 4A meet, which starts Friday in Albuquerque.
    The win at the district meet kept the Hilltoppers undefeated 2-4A streak alive. The Hilltoppers have won 12 straight district titles since joining 2-4A in 2000 and 19 straight district titles overall.

  • Softball: LA sweeps, grabs District 2-4A title

    In between games at Saturday’s Los Alamos-Santa Fe softball doubleheader, the Santa Fe Demons held a ceremony to honor their senior, during which they congratulated the Hilltoppers for winning the district title.
    While it wasn’t technically accurate at that point, the Hilltoppers made it so in game two.
    Los Alamos swept both ends of Saturday’s doubleheader, taking game one 10-0 in six innings game two 12-1, also in six innings to clinch the District 2-4A title.
    Had Los Alamos lost the second game, it, Bernalillo and Santa Fe would’ve gone into a tiebreaker, which Los Alamos probably would’ve won anyway, unless it surrendered more than 18 runs.

  • Tennis: Toppers bounced in 4A team semis

    ALBUQUERQUE — Both matches came right down to the wire, but in both instances, the Los Alamos Hilltopper tennis teams found themselves on the short end.
    Los Alamos’ boys and girls tennis teams were sent home a round earlier than expected Saturday. The Hilltopper girls fell to their arch-rivals, the Albuquerque Academy Chargers in the semifinal round of the Class 4A state team playoffs, while the Hilltopper boys were stung by the Farmington Scorpions.
    It was a wild finish in both team matches, particularly the boys match, which came down to the final game in the final match.

  • Running: Burnside is tops at Pace Race

    Eric Burnside had a spotless prediction of his finish time at this week’s Pace Race.
    This week’s Pace Race was held Tuesday on the North Mesa Trail.
    Burnside, 13, finished in 22:00, equaling his predicted finish time to win this week’s race. Burnside just edged out Dan Rees, who was off by one second. Michelle Jones was off by nine seconds.
    Jones was the top finisher on the 1-mile course Tuesday, earning a time of 10:03. Zac Jones finished the short course in 11:09.
    Jamie Jablin had the fastest finish on the 3-mile course, crossing in 18:37. Alexander Romero finished in 20:19 and Jeramy Coettee posted a 20:30.

  • LAHS Athletics: It’s a busy weekend for teams

    The final week of the 2010-11 spring sports season is one of the busiest, starting with this weekend.
    Los Alamos has teams competing in the state Class 4A baseball and tennis championships and the District 2-4A track and field championship. Additionally, the Hilltoppers will be involved with a crucial doubleheader in softball Saturday.
    Today, the Hilltopper baseball team will open a best-of-three series with the Artesia Bulldogs. The winner of the series, which has its first game at 6 p.m. and continues at 11 a.m. Saturday, will advance to the quarterfinal round. The quarterfinals are Thursday in Albuquerque.

  • Tennis: Lucido/Havemann wins boys doubles crown--video extra

    ALBUQUERQUE — They’ve known each other for as long as they can remember. Actually, even longer.
    Dominic Lucido and Chase Havemann were in the hospital nursery at the same time. Now, they’re sharing half of a state championship.
    Lucido/Havemann won a thrilling three-set contest against Albuquerque Academy’s George Cooper/Brandon Jew, bouncing back after being dominated in the second set to win 6-1, 3-6, 7-5.
    It’s the second straight boys Class 4A doubles championship for the Hilltopper program. Matt Whicker, who was on hand for the title match, and Patrick Raichur won that title in 2010.

  • Golf: Topper girls win 2-4A title at home

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper girls golf team may have gotten the boost it was looking for at Tuesday’s District 2-4A tournament.
    Los Alamos’ girls won the district title at the 2-4A tournament at Los Alamos Golf Course. Los Alamos finished with 374 shots Tuesday to earn the district title.
    The Hilltopper boys weren’t as fortunate, however. They finished second behind the Bernalillo Spartans and missed the cut for the state Class 4A tournament.
    The Spartans, who clinched their third consecutive district title, shot a strong 324 at LAGC Tuesday, outpacing the Hilltoppers by 24 shots.

    Softball game will be on KRSN

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper-Bernalillo Spartan softball game will be broadcast live on KRSN AM 1490.
    The Los Alamos-Bernalillo contest, a key District 2-4A matchup, will start at 4 p.m.
    Gene Mortensen, the “Voice of the Hilltoppers,” will call the action live from Bernalillo.
    Today’s game will also be streamed live on the Internet at krsnam1490.com.

  • Baseball: Toppers get 5 nods for All-District team

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper baseball team picked up five first-team honors on for District 2-4A this season.
    Hilltoppers Austin Aslin, Nick Baker, Billy Cooper, Jared Mang and Zeke Zumbro were all part of the district’s first team. The 2011 baseball honorees were announced earlier this week.
    Additionally, Hilltopper skipper Mike Gill, who guided the team to its third consecutive district title, was named Manager of the Year.
    Los Alamos’ five selections was the best total among the 2-4A teams. Santa Fe and Española Valley each had four players make the first team.
    Española Valley’s Ricky Gonzales was named the district’s Player of the Year for 2011.

  • Baseball: Toppers will take on Bulldogs Friday

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper baseball team will have a long road ahead in the state Class 4A tournament, starting with a long road trip this weekend.
    Los Alamos (13-11) picked up a No. 12 seed in the 4A tournament, which starts with a best 2-of-3 series Friday and Saturday. Los Alamos will travel to Artesia for a matchup with the fifth-seeded Bulldogs.
    The Hilltoppers qualified for the state tournament with their District 2-4A title. The Hilltoppers finished with a 10-2 district record to clinch their third straight title.
    In 2011, however, Los Alamos was only 2-8 against non-district teams this season, a mark which included five losses to other Class 4A teams. That mark dropped the Hilltoppers down to the No. 12 spot.
