  • 4A pool play round set for early Thursday

The Los Alamos Hilltopper volleyball team will have a tough pair of contests on its hands to open the Class 4A state tournament.
Los Alamos, the No. 11 seed in the tournament, has Artesia and Albuquerque Academy Thursday morning during the pool play round at the Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho.
Artesia is the No. 3 seed in the 4A tournament, while Academy’s Chargers are the No. 6 seed.
Depending on the outcome of pool play Thursday, which starts at 8 a.m. Los Alamos may play Thursday afternoon or Friday morning.

  • Blair, McDonald, Hodges earn honors

Los Alamos’ girls soccer team picked up a pair of top postseason honors in District 2-4A and the Hilltopper boys picked up a third this year.
Los Alamos’ Catie McDonald, one of the most prolific goal scorers in Class 4A this season, was named Offensive Player of the Year in 2-4A girls soccer. The postseason honors were released Monday.
Meanwhile, two Hilltopper fullbacks, one for the boys and one for the girls, picked up Defensive Player of the Year honors. Stephanie Blair was the girls 2-4A top defender of 2013, while Brandon Hodges earned the boys 2-4A award.
Los Alamos’ girls were the 2013 district champions and Los Alamos’ boys finished second behind Capital.
Santa Fe’s Keith Richards and Capital’s Eugene Doyle were named Coaches of the Year.
All but two players named to the girls first team were from Los Alamos or Santa Fe, the 2-4A runner-up.
Los Alamos’ girls earned five first-team nods, along with the two Player of the Year honors, while Los Alamos’ boys earned three first team honors.

  • LA misses out on at-large invitation

For the second straight season, the Los Alamos Hilltopper football team wasn’t invited to the Class 4A state playoffs.
The Hilltoppers, who finished as the runners-up in the 2013 District 2-4A race, was left out of the postseason bracket, which was released Sunday by the New Mexico Activities Association.
For the fourth straight year, only one team was invited from District 2 to compete in the playoffs. The Santa Fe Demons, who topped Los Alamos for the district title, will be the district’s only representative, and even the Demons were admitted solely because they had an automatic bid.
The Demons (4-6 overall, 3-1 in 2-4A) will go into the playoffs as the No. 12 seed, the lowest in the bracket. They will face fifth-seeded Las Cruces Centennial in this weekend’s first round in Las Cruces and will be a huge underdog heading in.
Los Alamos finished 4-6 on the year. It was 3-1 in 2-4A play, but didn’t beat a 4A team outside of District 2.
This is the third time in four years the Hilltoppers will miss out on the postseason. They were invited in 2011, but, like Santa Fe this season, went in as a No. 12 seed following a District 2 title and were hammered in the first round by Los Lunas.

  • 'Toppers given No. 11 seed for state

The Los Alamos Hilltopper volleyball team earned a very low seed heading into this week’s Class 4A state playoffs.
Los Alamos enters Thursday’s pool play round as a No. 11 seed. It will be matched up in Pool C with No. 3 Artesia and No. 6 Albuquerque Academy.
The Hilltoppers (13-8) finished as the runners-up in a tough District 2 regular season race, one which included fifth-seed Española Valley, a team that could be a sleeper in the playoffs should it earn some momentum.
That didn’t seem to sway the seeding and selection committee this year. The 4A playoff brackets were released Sunday.
Although it will enter as the No. 11 seed, Los Alamos was happy to get the opportunity to participate.
“They all watched the bracket announcements (Sunday) and everyone was really excited,” said Hilltopper head coach Robin Reynolds, who will be leading Los Alamos into the playoffs for the first time in his career. “We’re happy to be in at 11. In my bracket, I had us at No. 10 with Los Lunas not having a win over a top 10 team. But holy cow, it’s nice to be in the tournament.”

  • Trio of Hilltopper soccer players earn awards

Los Alamos’ girls soccer team picked up a pair of top postseason honors in District 2-4A and the Hilltopper boys picked up a third this year.

Los Alamos’ Catie McDonald, one of the most prolific goal scorers in Class 4A this season, was named Offensive Player of the Year in 2-4A girls soccer. The postseason honors were released Monday.

Los Alamos’ girls were the 2013 district champions and Los Alamos’ boys finished second behind Capital.

Santa Fe’s Keith Richards and Capital’s Eugene Doyle were named Coaches of the Year.

See the complete list of honorees in the Los Alamos Monitor later this week.

  • LA volleyball is in, football is out of postseason

One Los Alamos team will go into the start of the postseason this week as a low seed. The other won’t go in at all.

The Hilltopper volleyball team was given the No. 11 seed in the upcoming 4A playoffs, which start Thursday morning with pool play in Rio Rancho.

Meanwhile, the Hilltopper football team was frozen out of the 4A playoffs this season. The Hilltoppers finished as the runner-up in District 2 this season, but the district champ, Santa Fe, was given the No. 12 and final spot in the 4A tournament, meaning Los Alamos’ season is over.

The football playoffs begin Friday around the state.

For more information on those tournaments, read Tuesday’s Los Alamos Monitor.

  • 'Toppers sting Scorpions in quarterfinals, 1-0

ALBUQUERQUE – If style points counted, the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys soccer team might have been in trouble Thursday.
But as it turns out, the Hilltoppers’ gritty effort would prove to be enough.
The Hilltoppers ousted the Farmington Scorpions from the state Class 4A tournament. Although the Scorpions controlled the ball most of the way, they would never find the back of the goal.
Los Alamos’ defense was up to the task and forced the game into a shootout. In the shootout, Los Alamos connected on four of five kicks from the mark to dump Farmington 1-0.
The Hilltopper-Scorpion quarterfinal contest was held at the Albuquerque Public Schools Soccer Complex. The win puts the Hilltoppers into the state 4A semifinals for the fourth time in five seasons, but they would have a tough test against No. 2 seed Roswell today at the APS complex – results from that game weren’t available as of press time.
Against Farmington, the Scorpions were the aggressors for much of the contest. Los Alamos tried to chip its way through the formidable Farmington defense but didn’t make much headway, getting off only one shot in regulation and zero shots in the second half.

  • Demons win, will play 'Toppers Thursday

The Los Alamos Hilltopper volleyball team will take on the Santa Fe Demons for the third time this season Thursday night in the semifinal round of the District 2-4A tournament.
Santa Fe topped the Bernalillo Spartans in Tuesday night’s quarterfinal match. Santa Fe, the No. 3 seed in the tournament, defeated the Spartans 25-21, 25-10, 23-25, 25-19 to advance.
Los Alamos (13-7) and Santa Fe (16-5) met twice in the regular season, with the Demons winning the first meeting 3-1 Oct. 5 and the Hilltoppers winning the second 3-0 Oct. 23.
