The Los Alamos volleyball team wasn’t able to take of advantage of winning the first set on Monday, losing to Moriarty 19-25, 25-23, 28-18, 25-15 at Griffith Gym.
“The first two sets they (Los Alamos) had enough energy but the last two sets they just tanked because they didn’t have the energy,” Los Alamos coach Diana Stokes said. “In the first set they played real quick but it’s hard to keep that tempo when you’re not feeling up to par.”
The Hilltoppers (5-5) started set one on a 17-11 run and fended off Moriarty (9-2), who cut the Los Alamos lead to 21-19.
Los Alamos got off to another strong start in the second set, leading 12-9. After the Pintos tied the set 15-15, the Hilltoppers went on a 4-0 run to lead 19-15. But again Moriarty answered and tied it 19-19 and finished the set on a 6-4 run.
“Moriarty played tough defense,” Stokes said. “They attacked our open holes and that’s something we need to work on.”
Moriarty took over in set three and led 20-13. In the fourth set, the Pintos started the set leading 19-13 and sealed the victory with a 6-2 run.
Seniors Ellie Hayward and Mackenzie Alexander led the Hilltoppers with seven kills apiece. Alexander also tallied five total blocks.
