  • Golf: NNMSMGA results

    Here are the results from the Northern New Mexico Senior Men’s Golf Association tournaments this week. Monday’s tournament was held at Four Hills Country Club in Albuquerque and Tuesday’s was held at Sandia Golf Club in Albuquerque.

  • Sports update 05-26-11

    Soccer camp registration ends Monday

    The Los Alamos Hillltopper boys soccer program will hold its annual soccer camp starting June 6.
    Deadline for registration for the first session is Monday.
    The camp is for boys and girls ages 3-9. Session one will be at Urban Park and session two at Rover Park.
    Price for participation is $35 for one session, $50 for both.
    The first session will run from June 6-10. Session two will be from June 20-25.

  • Tennis: LA team is 2nd at sectionals

    A team from Los Alamos placed second in the Southwest Sectionals tennis competition.
    Los Alamos’ United States Tennis Association 3.5 Senior Ladies took part in the tournament, which was played in Albuquerque. Teams from El Paso, Tucson, Phoenix and Las Cruces also participated.
    At the sectionals, Los Alamos finished with a record of 3-2, winning six of 11 tiebreaker sets and pushing the undefeated Tucson squad to a 10-8 third set tiebreaker before falling in the final match.
    Los Alamos was captained by Lorraine Vasilik.
    Lee Harris and Mary Alei were undefeated at the sectionals, winning nine matches between them. Vasilik earned three wins and Elizabeth Keating won twice.

  • Baseball: Lobos bounce back from deficit to upend Cougars Tuesday, 5-4

    SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The University of New Mexico Lobos scratched out of 1-0 and 3-1 deficits to defeat the Brigham Young Cougars 5-4 Tuesday in the opening game of the 2011 Mountain West Conference baseball tournament.
    The Lobos used a solo shot by pinch hitter Jacob Nelson in the top of the ninth inning to grab their first lead of the game, a lead that didn’t hold. Nelson also walked and scored in the 11th inning to give UNM a 5-4 lead that did hold up.
    It was a dramatic 5-4 comeback win for the No. 6 seed Lobos, who entered the 2011 MWC tourney needing a string of upsets in order to claim the 2011 title and the automatic NCAA bid.

  • Sports Update 05-25-11

    Cross country teams holding meeting June 8

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys and girls cross country team will hold a meeting June 8 at Los Alamos Middle School.
    Anyone interested in participating in cross country during the fall 2011 season is strongly encouraged to attend. Information on the season will be discussed, followed by an informal group run.
    The meeting is set for 5:15 p.m. in Portable 1.
    Those interested who cannot attend the meeting are asked to call Rob and Kathy Hipwood at 662-9164 or e-mail rkhipwood@yahoo.com.

  • Baseball/Softball: Gill picked as North's skipper

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper baseball and softball players were shut out from the 2011 All-State Class 4A teams, but Los Alamos manager Mike Gill was named as the coach of the North All-Stars.
    The All-State 4A softball team was announced Tuesday by the New Mexico High School Coaches Association, which also releases the All-Star baseball and softball teams.
    Gill, the veteran manager of the Hilltopper baseball team who has led the squad to three consecutive district titles, will lead the 4A/5A All-Stars in their series against the South big-school All-Stars. He will go up against another veteran skipper, Miguel Gomez of Mayfield.

  • Running: Jemez Trail Runs results--see photo slideshow

    Nearly 500 people completed the three Jemez Mountain Trail Run races Saturday.

    Los Alamos hosted the event Saturday. Racers had a choice between 50-mile, 50-kilometer and half-marathon varieties.

    Event director Bill Geist said things went off Saturday with few hitches.

    "I thought it went really well," Geist said. "All but one of the surveys we got back said they liked it and the people who ran the aid stations really liked it because they didn't have to worry about keeping water cups filled."

    This year's race was cupless, meaning racers had to keep their own water with them rather than grab water cups at the stations.

    Sullivan Field is closed

    Los Alamos Public Schools announced that Sullivan Field and the running track are closed for the summer.
    The closure of Sullivan Field is for crews to install a new artificial playing surface.
    Those with questions should call 663-2531.

  • Girls track and field: LA's star pulls off unlikely trifecta at state

    ALBUQUERQUE — Doubling up on a shot put and javelin state title isn’t unheard of. Neither is winning both a javelin and 100 meter dash state championship.
    But Chase Ealey did something that might never have been done before and, except for a potential repeat performance in 2012, might not be done for years to come when she pulled off a win in all three events this weekend.
    Ealey, the rock star of the 2011 Los Alamos Hilltopper girls track and field team rocked the Class 4A state championship meet last weekend, picking up three individual wins and helping the Hilltopper girls 400 meter relay team to a state championship.

  • Running: Rees is top predictor in Pace Race Tuesday

    John Rees was the top predictor at this week’s Atomic City Roadrunners’ Pace Race, held at Barranca Mesa.
    Rees finished the long course of Tuesday’s Pace Race with a prediction error of just three seconds.
    Tuesday’s 3-mile course ventured into Bayo Canyon.
    Rees topped Daren Jones, who had the top prediction on the 1-mile course. Jones missed his predicted finish time by six seconds. Eric Burnside was off by seven seconds on the 3-mile course.
    Ben Rees was the fastest finisher on the 1-mile course with his time of 7:26. Charlie Hills was the fastest female, finishing in 8:47.
